Strong recommendation letters.

Strong essay topic: I have turned my disadvantages into advantages and created opportunities for my self. Focused on my one personal family struggle in my 10th grade year and how I have evolved from that hardship and contributed to the community.

I came to America at the age of 9 from China and Japan. As you can see on my SAT, it's my 560 for critical reading that brought me down. English is my third language. I talked about all the hardships I went through to create the best opportunities for myself.

anyone can help me out here??

Your application is very good if you emphasize your outstanding tri-lingual ability and relate it to a course of study. Many top tier schools are looking for linguistically able and gifted students; however I do not know about USC.

thanks for your input, garrity!

I did emphasize that a lot.. the only thing holding me back from USC is my borderline- GPA and below borderline SAT I score..

Your SAT is a bit low for USC, so I would say a reach, but the rest is pretty awesome; so probably a match to a slight reach. Why didn't you improve your SAT score? It would've given you a definite leg-up in admissions...

I did.. I studied really hard yet I got about 100 points lower....

I think I definately maxed out :( it's just my cr score

Can anyone else help me out?

Thanks!!

anyone?????????????

anyone else familiar with USC?

any final takers?

Theres two big things that are importnat to really gauge your chances:
1) can you pay for USC? or will you be on financial aid
2) are you a guy or girl?

USC, unforutnately, is a very money oriented school and if you can pay for college, your chances just got significantly better because that 50k you pay them every year is pure profit. If you can pay for college, id say slight reach-match as ur exc are amazing but your SAT 1 really cripples you.
Also, if your a girl, your chances are also really hurt. Girls who apply to USC have very strong apps and the acceptance average is roughly 3.8 uw and a 2100.

Your exc are amazing but ur gpa is a little sub par for USC and your SAT 1 is significantly lower. If your a guy, can pay tuitoin, slight reach-match. Otherwise i think ur a slight reach-reach.

When the "only thing holding you back" is GPA and SATs, you have a problem.

don't listen to suze stressedout, she is a very negative person.

also, flong, how does USC know if you can pay or not?

^^ thanks pmcharkins :)

But I do have 2 questions....

I don't think financial aid affects admissions decision, does it? No schools claim to do so.

I don't think being a female will give me too much of a disadvantage.. it just won't benefit me. I'd think my major would make more of a difference than my gender...

There are so many people posting who know nothing that this site has gone downhill in a big way this year. Most are applying to schools with sub par stats.

You are an ORM with sub par GPA and SAT for USC. You are in the overwhelmingly big CA Asian pool and you know what their stats are! You've been here a lot longer than many high stats immigrants too.

SC is working hard to raise their stats and become a more selective schools. 1300 old was the SAT average last year, up from the year before and significantly from 5 years ago. This year it will go up again.

And MOST colleges consider your ability to pay.

Of course you can also ask charmkins....???!!! Why bother posting for honest opinions in an anynomous forum if you're going to believe people who know nothing? Ask your neighbor if that's what you want, or your mom:)

thank you for your opinion too suze, that's why I'm kind of nervous this year, because I know USC has been trying to improve its standard drastically...

I just wanted to see how people would chance me once they see my whole resume.

I was not criticizing your opinion suze, but you present all of your ideas in a very negative way that is almost mean

and again...how does USC no if you have the ability to pay or not?

hello... replying back to your question..

first you need to figure out your UC GPA (capped at 8 semesters of honors credit) and find out what your a-g count is. i can't really figure that out based on your post... i will give you really helpful links and you can figure out on your own. if you can't figure out, send me another message or something. cut off is usually 7400-7600 points (100 points higher for out-of-state applicants).

http://www.geocities.com/kisasong/UCSDComprehensive.htm
https://tritonlink.ucsd.edu/portal/site/prospective-students/menuitem.24134797e5e2fd95a0b86710514b01ca?storyID=20690

by just looking at your stats, ucsd seems like a slight reach, but your disadvantaged background and leadership/ec's might help a lot. plus, i've seen few people get into ucsd w/ your stats/gpa.
there's nothing you can really do at this point.... the rumor is that decisions will come out on the 15th.

relax, stressedout.

Was that a serious question charmkins?. Look at the front page of any application.......

I'm direct and honest. I can see how that might be perceived as mean by those posting for the cheerleader "just go for it" posts so famous on CC.

Why bother if you don't want the truth. Most of the info is in common data sets. So many, like this OP, want people to tell them they'll get in DESPITE sub par stats. It's just stupid!

Prep school admissions came out this weekend. They are every bit as important to those applying as those applying to college. Although all the info is there to tell them if they haven't yet heard they're rejected, many are in total denial. I just don't get these boards....

I think what alot of people like suze fail to realize is that not everything is as rigid as a site makes it seem. I know people at NYU with 3.0 GPAs and 1150 SAT Is. Those stats are often buffed up and biased to make it look more selective, but they aren't cut in stone rules. Yes he is an ORM, but you must keep in mind that those are still pretty high national scores (a 1900 is above average), but its not as bad as suze is making it out to be.

Your anywhere from a high match to slight reach.

By the way suze are you like an admissions officer or GC, because otherwise what in the world makes you more qualified than anyone else on this board? If you are then just disregard the question :p
