Final College List

Does anyone mind chancing me for the following colleges:

Tufts*
Wesleyan*
Vassar*
Boston College
University of Rochester
Brandeis
Holy Cross
Boston University
Villanova
SUNY Geneseo

*These schools superscore ACT and I have personally verified this with their staff. Some other schools supposedly do as well, I just haven't been able to confirm it.

Here are my stats:

GPA: Unweighted - 95/100 (Might be 94/100 after this semester). My school doesn't weigh GPA.

Rank: Top 10% (Also unweighted, which kills me)

Course Rigor: I would say rather difficult. I have taken nearly all honors/AP/College classes.

4 AP's - Calc AB(5), Biology(5), APUSH(4), English Lit. & Comp.

This year I bridge with a local college. This is not a community college, it is a 4-year private college. These classes do not count towards my HS graduation. I just received my final scores for college yesterday and I received A's in both classes, giving me a 4.0GPA. I have sent my transcript to all the schools that I have applied to.
College Classes:
Chem. 211 - Gen Chem 1 with Lab(A)
Math 202 - Calc 2 (A)
Chem. 212 - Gen Chem 2 with Lab
Economics 131 - Microeconomics

I also take French 201/202 as a dual-credit class at my high school. This is through the local CC. I believe I have a B in this class, French is not my strong suit.

SAT: 2020 Superscore (690CR/680M/650W) - probably not going to send.

SAT II: Math II - 750, Bio-M - 730. Not sure whether to send or not.

ACT: Single Sitting - 34 (35E/31M/34R/36S/?W)
Superscore - 35 (35E/31M/36R/36S/10W)

EC's: Not the greatest, this is definitely my weak spot. Just some basic EC's (work, a few clubs, lacrosse), but no leadership positions. I was selected to participate in an exclusive (only 10/300 student chosen) internship program. I currently have an internship at Northwestern Mutual Financial Network and I am interning at a science research lab in the spring.

Recommendations: My GC rec. should be good. My teacher recs should both be good, one of them should be really good.

Essays: I am a pretty decent writer so I think they should be decent.

So what do you guys think? I'm also open to adding or dropping a few schools, if anyone has any input or suggestions. Thank You!

I have some further suggestions based on the experiences of my kid, and his friends.

Consider Michigan, Wash U, Emory, Vandy, Tulane.

I think you are too concentrated in the northeast.

Everyone wants to go to school in Boston.

You will get more bang for your buck by adding some geographic diversity to your list.

Thanks for the suggestions. I have looked at schools in the south, but a few things have deterred me from applying to any. I really don’t want to be farther than a 5 hour drive from home. Plus, I don’t think I would be able to tolerate the weather. I have lived in NY my entire life and have grown quite accustomed to the weather of the Northeast.

“SAT II: Math II - 750, Bio-M - 730” Send them. They are good scores for schools on your list. Further, you should try one Ivy say Penn CAS or Cornell A&S or both.

I thought Boston College superscored the ACT

Okay thanks you. I thought they were pretty good, but wasn’t sure if it was worth the cost. I might just send them to the more selective schools on my list (Tufts, Wesleyan, Vassar, BC). I am wary of applying to an Ivy. I haven’t spent anytime completing supplements for an Ivy school because I didn’t think I had any chance really. Plus, I still have to finish some other supplements, so time is against me.

I also saw BC mentioned online as an ACT superscoring college. I didn’t mention it though because I have been unable to verify it with their admissions office.

Anyone want to chance me?

Tufts, Vassar & Wes are high matches. BU is an obvious safety and you’re in. Do you really want both the U of R and Brandeis? Maybe just pick one or neither. BTW, BU, BC, Brandeis and Tufts is too much in Boston. You got a 34 on your ACT. Really, there’s about a 10% chance you won’t get into all of these. Honestly, take one shot at an Ivy despite EC’s; you have good ACT + SAT II’s.

I just looked at the supplements for the Ivies, and none of them seem manageable other than Dartmouth (not even the slightest bit interested) and Harvard (out of my league). I’m kicking myself now, I was not expecting such a high score so I didn’t even prepare to apply to an Ivy.

“I just looked at the supplements for the Ivies, and none of them seem manageable …”

What are you kidding? Cornell is just one straightforward essay due by the end of day Jan 2:

http://admissions.cornell.edu/sites/default/files/2013FreshmanSupplement.pdf

“…other than Dartmouth (not even the slightest bit interested)”

If you are not interested in Dartmouth, then why Wesleyan, Holy Cross, Tufts or BC?

Dartmouth is the most quintessentially New England liberal arts college there is. However, it’s more difficult than Cornell to get in.

None of them seem manageable should read “I suffer from chronic procrastination, and I still have a lot of stuff to do for the other colleges on my list.”

My main deterrent from applying to Dartmouth is its location and setting. Hanover is a really small city/town and from what I have seen it is a very rural area. I would like to go to a school that is in an urban or suburban area. Also, I would like to go to a school in a more populated area. Obviously, Middletown doesn’t exactly fulfill this requirement, but Tufts and BC do.

In a perfect world I would like to apply to Brown. I don’t want to rush through my other applications, and possibly not put my best work forward, in order to apply to Brown, though.

I second Washington University, maybe try Bowdoin as well. I’m not sure if they superscore their ACT, but if you have a 34 it really doesn’t matter.

You have good chances at many of these schools. I don’t see a real safety here though other than BU or Holy Cross. Other than not wanting to go far from home or going to either an urban or suburban location, what are you interested in studying? Any of these schools will offer a fine education but there is a huge difference in culture between BC and SUNY Geneseo, Vassar versus Tufts and so on. Certain schools will offer outstanding departments in a specific subject or research and internship opportunities more so than others.

Jessica, thanks for the suggestions! I have not really looked at Wash U yet, but I will now.

As for safeties, I have a few which I didn’t list above. I have gotten the priority apps from a lot of colleges and I have applied to Siena and Hartwick, so far. I am also applying to SUNY Brockport and Geneseo, which I believe are both safeties.

My interests are mainly science and math based. I am not currently positive what I would like to study, but I am looking into pursuing (Bio)chemistry, economics, or Math, though I have no clear favorite at this point.

I would consider SUNY Geneseo more of a match than a safety. It is the flagship liberal arts school for the SUNY system and is much more competitive than it used to be. Spend some time looking at the department websites for the schools. Vassar for example is not the school that comes to mind most frequently for what you are most interested in, although I am certain you would receive a fine education there.
