Final MT Decisions Background - Class of 2022

Wishing you luck as you and your son embark on his gap year, @librarygirl8 . I like to think of my D as a gap year warrior/“success story”. The additional year can be so beneficial-from learning about other programs, honing one’s weaker skills, earning money, and so much more!

@librarygirl8 you are correct - being a classically trained dancer does not get you into an MT program! If you read my hints to dancers I posted on here a couple days ago you will see I understand! It IS all about the voice. Thankfully my D had enough voice training to have a good mezzo belt and natural mix to head voice (I think I said that right haha) to get her in somewhere that I think she will be happy, but it was painfully close to not having any options (2 out of 18 applications) She would not stick with classical voice training and of course professionals can tell… She is also too reserved to show her personality in 5 minutes in front of strangers judging her. Your son is obviously talented and can sing well enough to pass pre-screens and get into 3 programs. I am curious what the dream school is and why he chose not to go. My D’s ex bf can’t dance to save his life but has a great voice and got into many good programs (to the dismay of my D!) If he works on voice and re-auditions I am sure he will be very successful next year!

@librarygirl8 - we had the opposite - few prescreens passed and I figured it was because dance is my D’s weakest area. A year to build, to train and to explore sounds wonderful and I hope it’s a positive thing for him. You might want to think of connecting to an MT coach just for the preliminary evaluation/consultation before planning his fall - the MT coaches would know which schools would appreciate his unique talents and training.

I wish the schools had an option- where for an extra bit of $$ , they would tell you the reason for the prescreen rejection. They’d make a ton of money and it’d be so helpful.

I am curious…One of my S’s friends is suddenly being all secretive about what school he is going to for MT/Acting. He was accepted to Pace, Michigan, and BU. He says that he cannot tell anyone until May 30? Has anyone heard of such a thing?

@MTdreamz - BoCo, and it’s the price tag.

@HopeinMT that’s new to me. Maybe waiting on funds?

@HopeinMT - the cynic in me thinks he was WL at one or more of those…

Ye-ah, that sounds weird. I’d agree with MomofJ5 - he was likely WL at Michigan and/or BU, told people he was accepted and now has to see if the school comes through. I certainly hope he actually got IN to one!

@CaMom13 - I never thought that he might not have gotten into any of them. Wow! That would take a skillful ability to lie. That would be awful. Well - if he suddenly opts for a gap year notwithstanding those “options”, you’ll know.

@librarygirl8 that sounds like a familiar problem with that school. I mean it’s 70k right?

@librarygirl8 ahhh and yea we didn’t even apply there because of distance and cost. Also took NYU off the table because of $$. Seems like there are plenty of good cheaper options. From what I have read on here BoCo doesn’t hand out scholarships. FYI Montclair gives instate tuition to MT majors and Ball gave my D enough scholarship money to make the tuition pretty close to instate - to the relief of my husband! LOL I think there was a post on the venting thread about good but affordable programs.

Congrats!! Junior mom here so here we go, but Catholic is on our list and we are hoping to visit. Love DC! We are with MCTA also… looking forward to mock auditions!

@kathyfry - Good luck to you! When you’re in DC, check out American U as well. It was on our list but we never made it there.

@mandidnam congrats on your daughter acceptance to IC it’s truly the most amazing program she will love it, My daughter is finishing up her freshman year in MT we have a parents FB page see you there!

@DramaQueen219, congratulations on your D’s acceptance, and welcome to UArts! It’s an amazing place. My D is now a senior MT major there. (Whoah—excuse me while I sit down—where has the time gone—I feel like we were just on CC going through this process ourselves!) Anyway, we’ve been thrilled with it!

@myloves Thanks! We are very excited. Things just moved so fast at the end of this process, so we’re still catching our breaths.

@MTdreamz This made me smile so much!

(By the way, as my D walked into her Ball State audition, the dance instructor told her she loved the triple turn she did instead of a single at the dance call the previous night! So that might explain why she is going there in the fall!)

What is says to me is that finding the right school is about so much more than great curriculum and reputation. It’s about finding people who see you as “you” and love what they see! Congratulations to your Daughter!

@daughtersdreams - That’s it!!! That is why my daughter fell in love with Rider. Those people saw her skills and made a point of tellng her on the spot how much they liked her. We keep saying that every program is different just like every child is different. The right fit is about where the artistry of the individual fits the training - so that the artist can truly be “trained up in the way they should go”.

To anyone: I read somewhere that a Facebook group is forming for MT parents so we can keep up with “what happened after they decided on their dream college”. Did anyone form this group? If so, what is it called???

^^You could call it: “Getting In Was Merely the Prologue” :))
