Finalizing college list for very smart female student (STEM)

LIKE !

@Kelowna, first, congratulations!! Second, so glad to hear the year in Germany is going so well!

Third, I was very interested in the fact that Vandy did not kick in more money on top of the scholarship. My son won the Chancellor’s (or was it the other one? I don’t remember!), but then kicked in 13K more on top of it! So had he gone, the cost would have been like $900 a year! Maybe that was because our need was higher, but based on the fact that you got a fabulous package from Yale, I have to wonder why Vandy didn’t give you more.

So glad it worked out for your D!

@sbjdorlo - interesting! Chancellor’s came in first (no interview etc). After she was awarded Ingram (such a great scholarship and she felt really, really bad turning it down ) she got a letter telling her that Chancellor’s has been automatically cancelled due to Ingram (better deal because of summer opportunities?) She called and asked if those scholarships can be stacked and was told no. She did not commit to Yale until a few days before the deadline and Vandy did not offer anything better. But - we did not ask.

@“Erin’s Dad” , @mathmom , @colorado_mom - so glad to see you guys are still here !!!

“Not sure what she wants to end up doing in life, so PhD programs, Law school, Med school - they are all in the picture. Money is of a huge concern as we are a typical middle class family not qualifying for a huge financial aid.”

  • I do not know anything about PhD or Law schools, but the college name is practically irrelevant when applying to Medical Schools. Any low ranked whatever place that she actually likes will be fine. The key here is to choose the cheapest option and save family resources for the Medical school. Top 25 or top 50 or whatever is not important. What important is to get as high college GPA as possible, hopefully 4.0 or close at ANY place.

“the college name is practically irrelevant when applying to Medical Schools.”

It’s not important for law schools, either.

@MiamiDAP , @Hanna - this is an old thread. I just resurrected it to update about daughter’s decision  She has already chosen.

But many readers haven’t chosen yet.
