Finally, UCF has it's own forum!

The University of Central Florida had previously been overlooked on CC, although there have been many references to it on other forums (Florida schools, college searches for the B+ student, etc...)

If you are one of those HYPS obsessed, type A CCer's, save your valuable study time and don't read any further. This school is not known for its prestige or US News ranking (third/fourth tier). It is known to be a beautiful school with great facilities, in (the outskirts of) a terrific city, with great weather, a good looking student population (really!), and is a terrific value.

Some forums where UCF has been discussed (before it got this forum) include:

<a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=157700%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=157700</a></p>

<a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=173042%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=173042</a></p>

I do not currently have a child attending UCF but I know of many people that do. My D2 has UCF on her short list. We recently visited the school (you can read my visit report).

For those of you unfamiliar with UCF, some facts:
It is a huge public university in Orlando, Florida (13 miles east of downtown) with an enrollment of 39,545 undergraduates and 7174 graduate students.
It is the seventh largest university in the nation and has the largest undergraduate enrollment in Florida.
The current UCF brochure lists the '07 est. Annual costs (including tuition, fees, room, board, and books to be;
Instate = $12,480 per year. Out of state = $26,005.
This is based on 15 credit hours per semester, double room and unlimited meal plan.
The university consists of 12 colleges.
The main campus in Orlando is on 1415 acres of land and has 145 buildings including an 85,000 sq. ft. Recreation and Wellness Center, and new for this Fall, a 10,000 capacity convocation center (where they will hold graduations etc).

The common data set for UCF is:

<a href="http://www.iroffice.ucf.edu/commondataset/commondataset06/commondataset06.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.iroffice.ucf.edu/commondataset/commondataset06/commondataset06.html</a></p>

What else? I used to think that it was a school for high school slackers but I have learned otherwise. UCF boasts 116 National Merit Scholars and its Freshman class had an average SAT score of 1201. The average high school GPA is listed as 3.7.

My elder daughter's friend choose UCF Honors (engineering program) over a multitude of higher ranked options. She loves the school and is very challenged academically. More and more students in this highly populated state are choosing to stay instate for college. You cannot beat the instate tuitions in Florida! UF and FSU are bursting at the seams with exceptional applicants who have chosen a lesser expensive undergraduate college ( and to be debt free) over the more prestigious and wildly expensive Ivy's and LAC's up north. As a result, all of the public universities (I believe that there are 11) in Florida have gotten increasingly competitive. It is called the "trickle down effect". UCF's academic reputation is definitely on the rise. It is definitely worth taking a look at.

I greatly enjoyed hanging out on the FSU page, but it's nice for UCF to have a home of it's own.

My D will be attending UCF this fall and she is very excited about getting to Orientation and then starting classes in August.

I will second the comments on the campus, it is spacious and very modern. Construction is underway on every portion of the campus and more buildings, sports facilities, and dorms crop up every year. The students have excellent facilities at all the Dorm and Student Life complexes and the concentric circle design makes it easier to get around. The campus is beyond Orlando but offers all the things that go along with it. The Rosen school of Hospitality is near Universal and Disney and the kids enjoy the benefits of those partnerships through campus visits, internships, and co-op. The School of Art / Graphics Design will receive accrediation from NASAD next year which I believe is the highest rating in the field. It is the campus that many want to go to.

Thanks to CD for putting up this link.

I was glad to see UCF getting it's own discussion section. We visited this school when S was looking at schools in Florida and was impressed with many aspects it had to offer. Ultimately chose UMiami, but I loved UCF. I sometimes still think it would have been a good choice for S.

I always wondered why such a large university was not included in College Confidential while smaller, inactive universities were just taking up space. Glad somebody got this started since my younger son is considering UCF and my niece will be graduating from there next semester.

Welcome cybermom!

I just discovered today that CC has created a UCF forum, how wonderful! My D is a 3rd year student, NM scholar, who is enrolled in the Honors College. We both love this school and I am glad that it has finally found its place here on CC.

“This school is not known for its prestige or US News ranking (third/fourth tier).”

This is going to change pretty soon. UCF already moved into third tier listing couple of years ago (consider a public university without medical school and established only in 1963). The College of Engineering and Computer Science (and all of its departments) is consistently being ranked in the Top 100 engineering schools both in US and in the world rankings (source: Wikipedia, US News, ARWU). UCF also moved from Top 400 universities in the world to Top 300 for the year 2009 (ARWU, 2009). With the new medical school and the funding that it will attract, the rankings are only going to improve. UCF is also ranked in the Top 10 universities (out of some 122 universities considered in the nation) on the patent scorecard for the last three years ahead of universitis like Harvard. It is also ranked as the 5th best and upcoming university in US (US News) now. UCF is a great public university to go with challenging academics and beautiful campus setting. No wonder it is the 3rd largest university in US with respect to enrollment and still boasts of an average incoming freshman highschool GPA of 3.8.
