Hi,

I have long been interested in Bates because of its strong academic reputation particulary in the field of economics. However, I been wondering how strong the Bates career serivces office is in helping Bates students recieve finance internships and jobs in competitive finance fields such as investment banking. Seeing how intense the competition is in this field right now and how 90% of investment bankers come from ivy league schools has prompted me to raise this question. Do any investment banks, bulge bracket or boutique, actually recruit on campus at Bates?

I greatly appreciate any comments/responses. Thank you!

Hi LACbound,
Current Batesie here. Bates has a great econ department, as you've heard. The major has been traditionally one of the most popular, so there are PLENTY of alumni out in the field who are almost always more than willing to get you some experience (or a job after graduation!) I'm not an econ major, so sorry for my lack of concrete details, but I do take advantage of the Office of Career Services (OCS) a lot and have noticed an abundance of active econ alumni (at student-alumni networking events.) Two econ major friends both secured paid summer internships in the i-banking field. One was definitely through the OCS (not sure about the other one.) Basically, I'm jealous of the networking connections that econ kids here have -- it seems to me like it would rival the opportunities that students at any other school might have.

Again, sorry I don't have more concrete details for you. I'd encourage you to "email a Batesie" (Bates College | E-mail a Batesie!) -- plenty of them are majoring/minoring in econ, as you can see under academic interests. Also feel free to let me know if you have any other questions about Bates!
