Finance major | St. Cloud vs Minot vs others?

Hey guys,

I’m an international student going to transfer to U.S. Here’s the problem, I’m only picking universities which are real cheap and affordable. In the meanwhile, universities should be good in my major too? Here I found two schools which are

Minot State University
St. Cloud State University

My major is Finance, which university suits me more? Beside that, is there any other affordable universities which you guys would recommend?

what’s your budget? what are your stats?

Budget is less than 20k. Another one I could find is University of Nebraska-Lincoln. But honestly my option would be in between Minot State University and St. Cloud State University, since its tuition fee+boarding is already less than 15k. For University of Nebraska-Lincoln, I’ve to gt scholarship, which will be slightly competitive so yeah. My last semester GPA was 3.51 and my CGPA is now 3.48.

Neither are very competitive schools. Between those I would choose St Cloud Stare. It is in a larger city and therefore more interesting. Minneapolis is about 65 miles away. It’s probably easier to get to as well.

The education will be at least as good as Minot.

Look on a map at where Minot and St. Cloud are. I spent 3 years at Minot in the Air Force. It is quite isolated and can get very, very cold (-20F at night is common) in winter.

wayneandgarth Thank you for your suggestion. Well, I hope St. Cloud is a good school. Or do you have any school to recommend? With low tuition fee like these schools

NoVADad99 Thats freakin cold omg. But which school would u recommend for finance major? How’s Minot State Uni in finance major?

Neither Minot State nor St Cloud are good for finance majors. I mean, they’re not totally horrible, but they’re very basic and not near a finance center. Unless you don’t have a better choice anywhere, I wouldn’t spend what sounds like an amount stretching your family’s budget, for them. They’re designed to serve the population in their region, students who didn’t get into the “big” university (called “the flagship”).
In any case, apply to the Honors college (or check out the conditions to get in and email the college’s dean.)
St Cloud is closer to Minneapolis St Paul, which is a major finance center, but among the MN state universities isn’t there one that’s as cheap - look at Mankato State, for instance. Transfers can live in appartment-style housing off campus, or join the Honors Leadership living-learning community.
A very commuter college in the Twin Cities is Metro State. No idea if it’s better than Minot for finance.
Another very cheap university in a very cold region is Chadron State and it, too, is rural, isolated, like Minot State.

Do you have family in NYC? If you have family who could house you rent-free, Baruch would be a good alternative.

The better would be the University of MN - Twin Cities, a world class university and much more diverse than those you mention. If you don’t qualify, I would recommend Minnesota - Duluth, Wisconsin - Eau Claire or Wisconsin - LaCrosse. From Duluth an eventual transfer to the Twin Cities campus is very possible.

The same to Wisconsin - Madison from Eau Claire or LaCrosse. But all three of these are better schools than St Cloud or Minot.

Supplement your costs through an on campus job. Many do this.

I agree, but the issue is that OP’s total budget is 20K.
it’s still worth a shot for a transfer scholarship at UMN Twin Cities.

Tuition and room & board at Duluth is $24k out of state. Also working some in the school year more in the summer helps with costs. Work study is another option to defray costs.

Another possibility might be Minnesota State University - Moorhead. Their finance program certainly should be on the same level as Minot State. Fargo-Moorhead is a much more vibrant business community with many more internship possibilities. MSUM has historically been very welcoming to and supportive of international students. Right now St. Cloud doesn’t necessarily have that reputation.

@MYOS1634 True, I know Baruch College, low tuition fee, good business school. But the thing is that, as an international transfer student (As in international transfer student in my college), we can’t really transfer to such competitive schools, they will not accept us. Besides, what is a finance center and how is it going to be useful to me?

@wayneandgarth Yeah, I’m qualified for University of MN - Twin Cities and University of Wisconsin-Madison. It’s just that the tuition fee is so expensive. University of MN - Twin Cities is way cheaper, but is it really worth to spend money on it? Or just spend on a cheaper school? Cs I’m not from a rich family, currency rate is so damn high now, I’m gonna burden my families. Nor have any of my siblings and also my parents studied oversea before. I’m the first one. So yeah. I’m more considerate over the tuition fee.

@Bekp2018 Thank you for your suggestions. I’ve looked through it. The tuition fee is almost same as University of MN - Twin Cities. So if I were to choose them, I would rather go for University of MN - Twin Cities, which d be a better option

Guys, what is a finance center and how is it going to help me in future?

A big advantage of UM Twin Cities is that you are in the heart of a major metro area, and summer employment will be much easier to find (many large employers in the area) . UM and UNL are both big ten schools and have large research budgets too. Lincoln has more of a mixed economy, and Minneapolis/St Paul has many major firms in agriculture and technology and even retail. MSP is also a really fun place to be, especially in the summer time.

A year or two ago I would have said go to Minot because of the extraordinary employment opportunities from the shale oil boom in ND, but not today.

If you can stretch your budget and pay for UMN-Twin Cities, it’s a MUCH better investment.
Baruch is easier to get into for an international transfer than UMN-Twin Cities. Just apply and see. However, there’s no financial aid, you have to pay the full fee (16K for tuition), then find housing (and housing alone will be 12K+… unless you have family willing to house you for free or for a small fee.) UMN Twin Cities has scholarships but the deadline for transfers must be very soon.
A finance center is a city that is important for finance.

Did you make a decision?
