It’s not the same thing as taxes, where there might be creative loopholes or deductions you might miss, it’s pretty cut and dry. We screwed up because we have money in the bank we planned on using on a big kitchen remodel, then covid hit and our contractor is still recommending waiting due to costs and shortages (he’s also a friend). We need that money for the renovation so it is what it is (got a roof, house painted and masonry done so it went down a bit). If you know you aren’t going to be eligible, and your student doesn’t want the $5500 federal loan, you don’t have to fill it out, I know people who dont.

If you are looking for a financial advisor who will help help you change your Fafsa for the exclusive reason of getting more need based aid, I doubt you will find someone.
