If I was a recruited athlete at Brown and my financial aid was terrible, what could I do? Supposing that recruited athletes all apply ED, how could one use the offers of other schools to get Brown to increase their offer? Is it a hopeless situation? In a dream world, if I could be recruited at all the ivies, how could I increase a terrible finaid package at Brown?

The Ivy Leauge despite being a division I school does not allow for athletic scholarships. Thus all your aid is need based. The only thing you can do to get more aid is what any other student would do (which I don't know), but I can tell you the fact that you are a recruit will not weigh into this at all.

Thanks for your reply. Sorry, I didn't word my question well. I understand that my being a recruit will not affect my financial aid package from any college. What does affect financial aid packages is comparing what Brown gave me to what Harvard would give me. In a normal scenario, if Brown offers $20,000 in aid and Harvard $30,000, theoretically Brown will increase their offer. My question is: if I'm an athlete that applies ED (and hence can't get finaid offers from other school), how can I increase my finaid offer? Is there any way to "apply" to other schools only to get comparative finaid offers?

Some schools have early reads you can do online. I think Dartmouth does, although all the Ivies are pretty much the same as far as financial aid goes. Also, talk to the coach that is recruiting you and see if they give out early reads for aid.

tough cookies kid, your fin aid package isn't related to being recruited. It's purley based on Brown's fafsa formula. There is usually some wiggle room with loans, so you can talk to them, but don't expect an overhaul.

And the thing is, if you're talking ivies, most finaid packages will be the same since they abide by very similar rules. But the bottom line is that Brown has a formula and sticks to it.
