Financial aid appeal

I am considering appealing for more aid, not because I greedy but there will be additional costs for my family in the fall when I begin school. Specifically paying full time day care for a newborn and part time for a school aged child. Daycare alone is an additional 10k a year. Is this a good reason to appeal? How would I go about wording my appeal? The FA officer at the school told me to email. Should I write it inbox or attach a word doc?

Also does anyone know TAP cutoff numbers? Before adding a 5th person ( we did not know # in family meant at the start of the term) my estimated tap was 500 yearly with an 11k EFC. So if anyone has any idea what that may increase to, if at all, that would be great

Jazzli, you can appeal and explain why you need the extra money, and see how it goes. Everyone should give it a go. Are you paying your FAFSA EFC or more than that? If you are getting enough aid so that all you are paying is your EFC, getting more is not likely because certain federal aid will not give more than that, and you start losing it as you get more funds. However, if your are expected to pay more than $11K a year, you might want to let the FA officer know that at your income levels, it is insane to pay more than that and that you do have small children in the picture.

However, I do want to tell you that your day care costs are NOT taken into consideration one bit. That is YOUR problem and not something that goes into financial aid consideration. It’ is not in the formula and not one of the items that are for special exceptions such as medical bills PAID not incurred but PAID, catastrophes like Hurrican Sandy that devastate a household, losing a job and being out of work for a while. If you have any of those things that are documentable and you bring the proof, that can make a difference.

I don’t know how TAP works. Sybbie could probably answer that one or direct you to someone who can answer specific TAP related questions not covered on the website.

Are these your children or your parent’s children?
