Financial Aid Awards

My son's first choice is UW but they don't give money up front like IU did, so I thought that if UW didn't offer much aid that IU would be a good 2nd choice. But after getting squat from IU, it looks like he will be a Badger next year.I feel like it was a waste even sending the FAFSA report to them.

You're not kidding! I contacted them explaining I'm a divorced mother who didn't work or get paid for eight months last year while I battled cancer. All they did was direct me to need based scholarships that are for Indiana residents. Gee, thanks, but we don't live in Indiana. The merit based scholarship was nice, but my son got two even larger scholarships from other schools.

riparian,
My son heard that some of that donation would be going to music scholarships, but he hasn't heard anything about how it would be distributed. He's hoping some of it might come his way, but there's no way to know. He's applying for IU scholarships and other outside scholarships, along with his RA job, to try to make things easier next year. (and so he can participate in some summer music programs and not have to work the entire summer!)

They (IU, that is) definitely do NOT meet need in any way, shape, or form.

well im not exactly sure what the selective scholarship app. covers but im prety sure the university grant is part of it cuz fin. aid office said the university grant is part of the admissions office and the selective scholarship app. is turned into the admissions office and also the grant is given to only sophomores-seniors and those students must have recieved the grant in the previous year. so im assuming those sophomores recieved a grant when they were incoming freshman and sicne our fin. aid doesnt list the grant and the fin. office said freshman arent considered for this award initially ( since sophomores-seniors get it first and are still eligible) im assuming the ssa is where u can qualify for a grant. i emailed about the selective scholarships and what they cover as well as if the university grant is part of it and ill post once i get a response.

i dont tink the reason they give crappy aid is because their stingy but its because they dont have much money. i cheked their endowment and it is prety crappy compared to other publics and even small private lac's. so they gota invest in students they know who will come for sure and will help their school u kno? endowment was like 300,000,000 and tat is small compared to the uc's and university of michigan. my bro's school is the size of my high school and they got 1 billion dollars.
