Financial Aid Early Action

Hey! Have any of you guys accepted under the early action program found out what your financial aid status is? I was finally able to logon to the MyAccess account, but for some reason it won't let me find out my Aid for 2012-2013. Thanks :)

Hey, not sure if this is going to help but I thought I’d give it a shot since Georgetown sometimes is very vague about details and financial aid certainly played a major role in my decision. Financial aid information should be arriving soon, but for me last year the package came via snail mail rather than on the myaccess page. In classic Georgetown style, we are once again talking about a small envelope (similar to the one your acceptance letter came in). Don’t be deceived though - sometimes this small envelope can contain some big $$. The information delayed posting on myaccess for a couple of days for me personally so don’t panic if it doesn’t appear there. Otherwise, just be patient and realize that the university is currently swamped with regular decision applications while simultaneously trying to address the financial aid needs of early applicants.

Thanks! That was really helpful. Financial aid is playing a big role for me too in whether or not I can attend, but I’m hoping that it will all work out for the best.

Does anyone know if Georgetown gives out a lot of aid? My family’s EFC is about 10 k and Miami didn’t even give me 10k in grants…

Georgetown uses a need-analysis formula to determine financial aid and expected family contribution for each student. However, even as a student here I do not know what exactly goes into this formula. In addition to financial aid, Georgetown provides some students with need-based scholarships made possible through the generosity of donors and alumni. These are often the “make or break” of a Georgetown financial aid package. GU scholarships can make a large dent in the overall tuition costs - moreso than their work-study and federal grant counterparts. This year’s freshmen class currently has about 50% of students receiving some sort of financial aid. I don’t know the exact numbers , but this is a great time to be applying since the current Campaign for Georgetown is pushing a new platform to encourage philanthropy that would make financial aid packages here even more competitive. There is of course in addition, the 1789 scholarship, John Carroll scholarship, etc. If you are a competitive student and Georgetown views your application favorably, you have a good shot at receiving some sort of financial aid or scholarship. The university is looking to fill the incoming class with intellectual and dynamic students so if you fit this profile, you become a hot commodity.

Does financial aid information come with the decisions for RD applicants (well, in my case, a deferred EA applicant)? Or will it be even later than that?

Financial aid decisions for regular applicants essentially come at the same time as the decision. I was accepted early, but my friends who were accepted regular got their financial aid information either the same week - or even the same day - as their decision. For instance, some of them got their acceptance letter and financial aid package in two separate envelopes and accidentally opened the latter first. Either way, they quickly found out they were accepted haha

Last year’s RD acceptance letter was dated March 25th and S received it around the 30th. The FA letter was also dated the 25th but the envelope is postmarked April 8th. I do remember that it followed the acceptance by at least a week and the postmark confirms that. Both letters were in standard size #10 business envelopes.

It’s now March 1st. Only 30 days or so to go for the RD applicants! :)

Sorry if I’m missing something really obvious here but I was also accepted EA and have no idea what the MyAccess account is - does anyone know how I can access it?

you should have received it in the mail a couple weeks ago… if you didn’t, i would suggest calling the admissions office and letting them know or something :)

I was mailed my NetID, but I cannot access the MyAccess page. Can you only access it once you’ve formally committed to Georgetown?

I had trouble too (I finally found it :)); I tried logging on with the NetID and passwords they gave me but they weren’t working…

^cuddlemecozy I contacted the Financial Aid Office and they said that even early applicants are supposed to find out about financial aid on April 1st. I guess things are just really hectic over there right now.
