I got accepted into Georgetown today, and I am beyond thankful to have this opportunity.
The only thing I’m waiting on before I submit my deposit is the financial aid package.
I was wondering if anyone here knew if Georgetown is “generous” with their financial aid awards? I’ve read mixed opinions regarding this.
My family is very low income (~$30,000 total income for 3 people).
From what I’ve heard, it seems they’re kind of hit-or-miss with FA. They can be quite generous though if they do give aid, especially for low-income families. There’s a program called the Georgetown Scholarship Program that’s dedicated to first-gen and/or low-income students and that’s an immediate $10k scholarship per year in the FA package on top of any FA they give, along with a support network to help the students navigate college. Given your bracket, you’d definitely qualify for it, so I would expect a generous package.
@masquerade98 Ahh hopefully I am offered a generous package! I do not think I am qualified in terms of merit for the Georgetown Scholarship Program though. Do you know if this program is available to everyone who is first-gen/low-income, or those with stellar stats as well?
It’s a separate process from admissions, and they consider stats and circumstance in a much more holistic way since they understand that stats alone often don’t tell the full story. I don’t know exactly what the breakdown is in terms of what they consider, but stats alone definitely will not disqualify you.
Also, if you have your MyAccess login already, you can check your finaid package online without waiting for the mailed copy, unless they’ve changed how it works from previous years.
It killed a friend of mine to have to turn down GU for her son. The financial aid was woefully inadequate. He is the youngest of 5! I think the price for her would have been $43+ and she just couldn’t do it.
Our daughter was accepted to 7 selective colleges. The FA offers from 6 of the 7 were almost identical. The exception was not GT - they were spot on. Of course it was the ivy she would most like to attend that offered half. We will be asking them to take another look.
