Financial Aid Exceeds Cost?

What happens when the amount of aid awarded exceeds the total cost of attendance?

Cornell takes into account tuition, books and supplies, housing, dining, and person and miscellaneous expenses when giving aid. The allowance for books and supplies this year is $800. What if I choose to buy my books on amazon or at barnes and noble instead of the Cornell Store. Therefore, I would not be using my Cornell Card, and the book and supplies fee won't show up on my bursar bill. Will my bursar bill balance be negative ( -$800), and it will cover any other expense that is on my Cornell Card (such as me upgrading to unlimited meal plan)? Or will Cornell's Bursar Office issue me a refund check?

When Cornell says that the allowance for books is $800, they don’t charge you $800. Instead, they use that number in calculating your aid.

You will be refunded whatever amount is leftover after they subtract the tution and housing/dining costs.

so what if you don’t use the amont for that semester. Will it transfer to the next semester or next year?

I called the Financial Aid office, and I was told that as long as I have my .Net account set up, any excess amount will be refunded as a direct deposit to my account.
