How badly does it affect your chances if you're an international who will require pretty close to a full ride? I'm a homeschooled British citizen applying this autumn to Wharton; I'm a 2340 SAT and am starting my own business; but I'll definitely require a very large amount of FA. The thing is, UPenn is good for so many "professional" majors that I'm really into.

Should I apply? What kind of international students are those near-50 FA packages awarded to each year?

Penn is only need blind for North American students. As an international needing aid, you’re put in a more competitive pool and it will significantly affect your chances. You should still apply though, all you have to lose is the application fee.

I think need-blind admissions are only for US citizens and permanent residents. If you’re a foreigner then stating that you need financial aid is going to significantly lower your chances for admission.

I know some people who got into Harvard by not applying for financial aid. The same year another applicant from the same school didn’t get in, even though she was clearly the best student in the school by a pretty wide margin (won a national essay competition and qualified for the national team on the IMO (= international math olympiad)).

If you’re brilliant, they’ll want you regardless of need. They have the FA to give, it’s just a question of distributing it wisely. I hope you apply ED. It sounds like Penn’s pre-professional atmosphere is right for you, and English accents are always great to have on campus ; )

If I’m not wrong, only seven schools are need blind for internationals These are Dartmouth College, Harvard University, MIT, Princeton University, Williams College, Yale University, and Amherst College.
Also you have to know that your FA can (not always) be less than US citizens and permanent residents when you are international. So I recommend that you apply to schools for ED so you can see your FA.

Actually there are 8 need blinds for internationals . Add middlebury to the above list. As for the FA at penn it significantly impacts your chances but if you are a quality applicant and show that you really want to come there, they ll give the money. I am an international myself with 60% in aid.
