My family income is very low and we have very little assets with no property, except that my father has property rights of a government-owned house in another country. He cannot sell the house and can only live in it. The MOST my mother can afford (father in foreign country and doesn’t work) is 10k with loans and study-work. Would that be possible? And I contacted financial aid to change my housing status because I put with parents on Common App but on FAFSA and CSS Profile, I put on campus, which is where I plan to live.
P.S: I just sent in CSS Profile Friday because it costs money and I was deferred until Friday…Is that too late?
Just want to make sure if you are international, in state, or from OOS?
Submitting CSS Profile last week is okay although not optimal as they have already sent out many estimated FA packages.
OOS. I sent it out later because I thought I wasn’t going to be admitted. How long will it take for my financial aid package to arrive? I am really really afraid that the money will be unaffordable…because I don’t want to go to my safety school.
@ThePariah It may take them 2-3 weeks upon receiving your application to prepare an estimated FA package for you You should have submitted it earlier as you may not have much time to evaluate the FA package before the May 1 deadline.
Oh. It was just the CSS Profile and FAFSA, right? Besides my safeties, UMich is the only university I was accepted to, so I would pay the deposit either way.
Has anyone had any luck trying to increase their grants? I received a little over 8K but that doesn’t make a dent in the OOS tuition. My parents work a full time job each and both work side jobs but we can’t swing this tuition. If anybody has pulled off a miracle with UM matching other school’s offers or just getting their aid increased please let me know how you did it. Amazing that the school I really want to go to gives hardly anything and the other schools I applied to that I liked but weren’t my favorite gave crazy merit aid. Always the way.
@ThePariah Congratulations!!! I can’t believe they are so efficient. They must have already finished most of the estimated financial aid packages already and are out of work right now. We just submitted some documents and it took them 3 days to update the record as the financial aid notice for returned students is not due till June. They may be busy again right around or after May 1. Anyway, make sure you check the WA to see if they have requested any documents for verification. Send those in as soon as possible so that they will give you an official final aid award. Last year, they replaced the loan with grant for my D after verification.
@billcsho. Wow, that is amazing. My mother is the only person in my family who files taxes because my father is unemployed and in another country. Do I need to include the non tax-filer form for him? If so, it’ll take me a bit for him to sign it and send it back, etc.
