I was recently admitted to the University of Michigan- Ann Arbor, and my family just ran their NPC. Our estimated family contribution is $12K, but the calculator says that we would not receive ANY financial aid. No loans, no grants, nothing. I am OOS (Minnesota), but I thought we would at least get something even if UMich didn’t meet our full need.
*hit return by mistake. I meant to ask how prone these calculators are to error. My father owns his own business, so I think that might be part of the problem.
Is your family income over $90k or with asset over $50k? For OOS, they only meet the need of students with less than $90k family income with asset below $50k. FAFSA EFC has little meaning when your need is not met by the school. When your family has a business, the NPC would be off. You should wait for FA package from UMich which should be coming out soon.
University of Michigan uses the CSS Profile in addition to the FAFSA. Your FAFSA EFC really has no bearing on their awarding of institutional need based aid. The info on the Profile is what they will use.
Your FAFSA EFC is too high to receive any federally funded grants.
At this point…just wait and see what your financial aid award is from Michigan. You are right…that business could be part of why you aren’t seeing as much aid from Michigan as you hoped.
Yes, that’s likely the problem. FAFSA doesn’t capture all of that is involved with that, but CSS profile does. Your dad likely takes deductions that gets added back in by css profile schools. If you applied to other css profile schools, this issue may repeat itself.

That is just a federal number from FAFSA…it’s not really the estimated Family contribution to any school.
You were poorly advised in regards to your list since you have mostly CSS profile schools…
What kind of business does your dad have?

If you’re serious about going to med school, then really uminn is probably your best bet. Those others will be loaded with top students vying for top grades in the premed prereqs.
Have your parents said how much they’ll spend each year on college?
@mom2collegekids I’m very lucky in that my parents are going to pay for my entire tuition. They are willing to give as much or as little as I need. UMich tuition is kind of the exception. It’s okay if they don’t meet our entire need, but we are not spending 65K a year on undergrad. My father is a self-employed musician, and we fall firmly into the middle class income bracket.
Thank you all for your help! My parents and I are aware of our other options, so we were just wondering about UMich. Sounds like I’ll just have to wait for my FA package to know for sure!
If your parent is self employed, no one’s net price calculator is really going to give you an accurate number. You will probably have to wait for the actual packages.
Repeating what @sybbie719 stated. The net price calculators are not typically accurate for the self employed. There are a LOT of deductions allowed for income tax purposes that are NOT allowed for financial aid purposes…and they get added back in as income for some of those Profile Schools.
You will just have to sit tight…and see what your actual financial aid packages are.
Among CSS profile schools, UMich is actually more generous as they allow a significant amount if equity protection. Just wait for the FA package which should be available any day within the next few weeks.
If you are not under their need met income limit, other need met schools would likely to have better offer. After all, each school has their formula to calculate your need.
@3js3ks UMich meets the need of all in-state students. If your family income is below $65k, the tuition is fee starting this year. Have you checked their NPC?
