Quick question. My friend did not apply for financial aid for college, and obviously did not fill out the FAFSA for the 2010-2011 school year. For the fall semester her parents paid for the tuition out-of-the-pocket, but now it seems she needs some help.

Is it possible she can still fill out the FAFSA and receive even a little bit of financial aid? Or are private loans her last resort? Or do private companies even loan out money for the spring semester?

Thanks in advanced. My friend isn't really good with all this financial stuff (well neither am I) but I'm just doing my best to help her out. Any advice is appreciated.

She can still fill out the 10/11 FAFSA but should do so asap (aren’t bills coming due now?) and notify Rutgers that she needs to be packaged for spring. It’s very likely that if her folks could pay for the fall bill out of pocket that her “aid” may consist entirely of loans. But filing FAFSA will make her eligible for Stafford loans and that may be all the help they need. Her parents may be offered a Parent Plus loan, or they can request one through the school. They should probably investigate which loans would best suit their situation. Finaid.org is a great website for everything related to paying for college. Btw, both she and a parent will have to apply for their FAFSA PINs first if they haven’t done so already.
