Financial aid from two countries?

Hi, I am a dual American and Norwegian citizen living in NJ. I was recently admitted into UC Santa Barbara and I’ve decided to enroll there this fall. I got my American financial aid results back a couple days ago and according to the online information I’m going to receive around $26k in grants. However I am also a Norwegian citizen and I qualify to receive another $35-40k in annual grants and scholarships from the Norwegian government because any Norwegian citizen has the right to free education practically anywhere in the World. Now my question is, will receiving aid from Norway mean that I can’t get American aid or is it possible to benefit from both systems and thus fully cover all my college expenses?

You are required to report your Norwegian money to your college here. This will reduce your financial need. The college will determine how to reduce your financial aid award.

If you are receiving a Pell grant, or Direct Loan, those will not change. Grant money awarded by the college might change. Usually colleges reduce self help aid first starting with loans, then work study, then institutional grants.

but ALL additional outside scholarships MUST be reported to UC Santa Barbara. They will make the call on how this affects your aid there.

It is not likely that this will reduce your EFC.

Thank you very much!

But really…UCSB will give you the definite answer! So contact them!!
