Financial aid greater than tuition

I received my financial aid letter a couple of days ago and received approx 20k in grants and scholarships (no loans). This covers almost the entirety of the cost of attendence. However, what the letter does not take into account is Bright Futures. I'm expected to receive the FAS Award which would bring my COA down to more around 17k. Will the school decrease my financial aid in accordance or will I get to keep the extra 3k for personal expenses?

They’re not going to give you more than the estimated cost of attendance…it’s not a candy store. You likely will get after first week of classes some left over money you can use for personal expenses after USF is paid for everything they bill you for, but not more than the estimated cost of attendance total.

Ah, so my financial aid will decrease in accordance, I figured as much. But how is this “some left over money” you mentioned calculated?

EDIT: Just to clarify, since you said I won’t be offered funds that exceed the COA, wouldn’t I technically not have left over money then?

Often expenses like books, medical insurance, fees, and some travel (not all depending on how you travel) to and from school are figured into the cost of attendance. If your scholarship money exceeds the COA, the school will take some of it back. Usually you can see an estimate of the COA on the college website.

I received my financial aid as well and unfortunately have a nice chunk of loans. BUT it was a lot more than I was expecting so that’s great. Too bad it will be greatly decreased.

You have to tell them whatever outside sources you will be receiving, such as Bright Futures. The amount you receive from BF will be deducted from what they give you.
