Financial Aid help

Hello. I have been accepted to IU, and recently got my financial aid information. To my surprise, I have no aid offered. My EFC is 17,568, and thus, I will not be able to afford the tuition with this amount of financial aid. Can someone help me as to why I have received no aid, and what can be my next steps?

For some background information, I am a US Citizen living in a foreign country for the past six years. Thus, I have no state residency. When I attend college, I was hoping that I would get in-state tuition after a year, after establishing residency there.

You’ll probably get in state tuition after reestablishing, but most public colleges give limited need based aid, and mostly for in state residents.

Often residency laws have some bit that says you can’t be moving there for educational reasons. Otherwise everyone would get in-state rates after a year, and they don’t want that. You’ll have to do significant research, don’t just assume that will work.

So this might be a little off topic then, but would you have an idea of what I would need to do to establish residency in my situation?

You need to check with the state. Best case scenario, you need to move there, find a job, rent a place, register to vote as well as your car (or driver 's license with no car) and live independently for a year without taking any class.
Worst case scenario : you’ll be considered as oos for tuition till you turn 24 unless your parents move to the state.

I’m not sure about the residency conflictions, but I do know that for Californian schools, your EFC must be at most 5500 to receive state financial aid. The number is most likely different in Indiana, so I would research on that.

@ghraace: OP is not a state resident anywhere so all they would be eligible for is federal aid. Establishing residency in California is not happening until OP turns 24 and shows complete independence, then they would be eligible for CA state aid along with Federal aid.
