Financial aid is awful

My EFC was $6700. I was offered $26,500 in loans...no grants. Does this even sound right?

Is there a chance to appeal this? Or am I just out? I am a bit , quite a bit, sad now.

So sorry to hear that! When did you apply for fin aid?? I’m graduating this semester but usually if I turned in FAFSA by january I got a ■■■■ ton of money, although my EFC is 0.

I filed the FAFSA Jan 1.

@undecided from the Pell Grant site:

Therefore you would not be grant eligible. These are not UT’s rules, but government limits.

UT is notoriously terrible for financial aid. Both my parents went there and even though both were putting themselves through college with 0 help, all they received were loans.

I heard that if your EFC is low (annual icome <$40k) they will give out a lot of grant.

I’m confused. Is this aid that they’re giving us now (I got the same thing as OP) our final fin aid awards or is there still the possibility of scholarships and work studies?

UT just sucks at giving aid period. I was given lots of grants from other colleges that were outside of my state; which is Texas. My EFC is 00000, but UT felt the need to give me $23,000 worth of loans I never heard of. Lmao, my outside school gave me a full ride, so I’m declining UT’s terrible loans. I’m not planning to be in a pit hole of debt at the age of 18! I really did not care about UT in the first place; since their CNS students admitted rate into med school is about 50%; which is very disappointing for a school trying to start their own med school? Lmao, even A &M gave me a full ride worth of only grants! UT is NOT worth the painful debt! My advice find a school that actually gives a damn about you; instead of their brand name!

Where will you go ^ really a&m that much. Wow my efc is 10 you think they might award me. Congrats cuo2014

@135pipe. I will decide by the end of this week where I may go. Texas A&M can award you as well Regent scholarship, Aggie assurance ( free tuition), and lots more programs provided there. My friend also got a great package for jioning corps of cadets & for being an eagle scout. In addition to that A&M won’t hold back on the Texas grant, Pell grant, top ten percent grant(they offer you the maximum), unlike UT’s nonsense.

Thank you @Cuo2014 keep me updated man. Good luck

With an EFC of zero you would or should have been Pell Eligible. Did your package not include the Pell? You should have also received the Top 10% grant. Was this also missing? If so it warrants a phone call to the FA office. Something does not add up here.

I know of someone who did not have a very low EFC who was offered generous grants. Does UT do preferential packaging?

@austinareadad I think they do. Which is wrong. I mean, they should not be using tax payer funded need-based aid as merit type aid. That should be done strictly based on need. I called them and they said I would only have gotten the need based grants if I were in a special group such as one that would “promote diversity” or honors programs. So they are using the need based grants to promote their racial agenda and as merit scholarships. This is just wrong. They are not even supposed to do this legally. Legally, they are not supposed to use race as a factor when giving need based grants or work study. But they are.

I’m a poor smart black kid who did not get a dime. -_-
Lol, UT does not care for the minorities as much as people think. Many of the highly ranked minorities in my school district got nothing from them… UT just picks who the hack they want!
They don’t care for poor minority people, unless your a gifted athlete. Lmao, minorities do not make even close to 25% of their school. Race is not a factor in their system, unlike other schools. However, their need base aid is poorly done. People come out of there with over 100,000 debt of loan with a simple degree…

Perhaps it varies by major?? I mean it would make more sense to give STEM majors the majority of financial aid because they give more back to society than say anthropology/gender studies majors and the like. Not giving financial aid to the social sciences would be more of a deterrent so people dont pursue those degrees. Before you begin to rage I do agree there needs to be artists and historians but the number of people entering those majors is disproportionally high.

The UT system has one of the largest endowments in the United States. Does this not contribute to financial aid?

So the grants people got from UT, are they for 1 year or will they be receiving it every year for 4 years?
