Financial Aid Override

Hey everyone,

I’m in a pickle. To get my financial aid override I have to send some more documents. I have some of them but not all of them like:

• Copy of your current lease or mortgage statement.

I live with someone and my name isn’t on the lease at all. She needed a roommate to help with some of the expenses. What do I do?

You get her to write a letter stating what your monthly rent being paid to her is.

She will have to sign this. Do you have any documentation from paying her the rent you pay? Receipts, cancelled checks?

But really…having some kind of lease arrangement might be in your best interest.

She is also likely violating her lease agreement by not having you on her lease.

If you don’t have cancelled checks but can show a steady payment history ($500 on the first of every month?) of that you paid certain bills (electric bill in her name, but you paid $212.12 in Jan, $257 in March, etc), attache to her letter. They aren’t really judging how much you pay or that you have a lease, just that you are paying the costs of your own support.

If you have a valid reason for your override, the fact that you live with a friend is not going to keep the school from approving your override. Just have the friend write a letter explaining the arrangement, and have her sign it. Showing receipts or canceled checks would be helpful, as well. I assume your override isn’t based on the fact that you support yourself (because that is not a valid reason for the school to provide the override) - the request for information is part of the documentation they have to collect, but not having your name on a lease is not going to be a factor in denying your override.
