So I'm a bit new here but this question has been stressing me out. Does anyone have any idea how my current financial aid package will be adjusted with the inclusion of Cal Grant A (approx. $11k grant) for attending UC Irvine? I tried calling but I just got the machine =/. Here is a summation of my current package:

Total UCI Cost: $28,357.00

Awards:
$9,867.00 (from UCI grant)

$7,500.00 (from federal student loans) and $10,990.00 (from federal PLUS loans)

EFC: $9,590.00

As you can see the Cal Grant has not been factored into my package yet... must send verification I am actually transferring, by the way I'm Blue and Gold eligible. Any help will be appreciated, thanks.

*EFC: $9,590.00
*

Are you certain that with that EFC that you’re Cal Grant eligible?

If you’re B&G eligible, then likely you’ll get more grants “up to” the “fees/tuition” of your UC…so probably another $4k or so.

Blue and Gold just promises that your fees will get covered…so if that’s about $14k or so …then as long as you have grants that add up to that much, B&G promise is satisfied.

If you’re given the Cal Grant of that much, then likely your UC Grant will be removed.

Did you ask why you weren’t given work-study?

the Plus loan is to mostly cover your EFC.

Fees are only just over $11k, not $14k. The additional amount is for campus fees that are not covered by Blue&Gold or Cal Grant (only systemwide fees are covered).

Doesn’t even look like Blue&Gold was applied with under $10k in grant from UCI. Should add up to just over $11k. Income and asset ceilings are actually set fairly high for Cal Grant so I would think an almost 10k EFC would be possible (but I could be wrong :)):
http://www.csac.ca.gov/facts/2011-12_incomeceilings.pdf

Blue&Gold just requires a Cal Grant application (FAFSA + GPA Verification) and income less than $80k.

OP:
If you have Cal Grant A coming, it will likely replace at least some (if not all) of that UCI grant. However, it will ensure that your systemwide fees are covered. UCI might keep some of the grant money on to cover the campus fees as well, but there’s no guarantee. You’ll just have to wait and see to get a final answer, though. The UCs can be difficult to predict outside of the systemwide fees.

According to the great state of California I’m entitled to it since I’m a California community college transfer student and some other details I didn’t pay much attention to.

Didn’t ask why I didn’t receive work study but I will.

So the amount of loans wouldn’t just be reduced to my EFC of $9,590.00?

*According to the great state of California I’m entitled to it since I’m a California community college transfer student and some other details I didn’t pay much attention to.

*

???

Cal Grant eligibilty is based on income…not being a CC transfer. CC transfers that come from families that earn too much do NOT get Cal Grants.

So, you need to determine whether your family’s size/income ( I think size matters as well as income) is low enough to get Cal Grants.

Kender…thanks…for some reason I was thinking that the UC’s systemwide fees were going up to about 14k, but I guess not. :)

Ok…well, then, if the student DOES qualify for Blue and Gold (by family income limits…under $80k), then either the UC grant should go up a bit, or some Cal Grant money should get apply.

However, I hope the student isn’t expecting a huge difference in aid if qualifying for Blue and Gold or Cal Grants. The loans will still be there and the family will still have to pay its EFC. The UC grant will likely get lowered if a good sized Cal Grant is applied.

*So the amount of loans wouldn’t just be reduced to my EFC of $9,590.00?

Do you mean the Parent Plus Loan?

Or do you mean the student loans?

Okay thanks for your help Kender and mom2collegekids. I was able to get into contact with a financial aid advisor and cleared everything up.

I’m not sure if this is what you mean mom2collegekids but you can apply for a Cal Grant Entitlement Award in one of four ways I qualified for this one I guess and got awarded it. As a community college transfer student, as long as you are under the age of 28.

I guess my financial need is that an average student budget at a UC is like 3/8 of my family’s income and have a household of 5 yet our EFC is crazy -.-

Thanks again guys.

Apparently there is a Cal Grant Transfer Entitlement. [California Student Aid Commission - What is the Cal Grant Transfer Entitlement Award?](http://www.csac.ca.gov/doc.asp?id=920)

I think you misunderstood what I meant.

A student doesn’t get the aid simply because he/she is a Calif CC transfer student. All such transfer students don’t get the money. You qualify because of income.

There is no such deal as…I am a Calif CC transfer student, therefore I’m entitled to get this money.
