Financial Aid (PHILLIPS EXETER)

Heeeeeello everybody :-*
I like to know about the FA systems, if there is any disadvantage for being a applicant with those needs. And if it is allowed up to 100%? Thank you :x

There’s a disadvantage if you are an FA applicant. I don’t remember exactly what @GMTplus7 said, but I think it was that if you apply for FA, your chances are halved; if you are full pay, your chances are doubled. For example, if the school has an admission rate of 14%, if you apply for FA your chance is 7% and if you are full pay your chance is 28%? I’m not really sure if I’m remembering this correctly though!

And yes, you can apply for full FA, but that would be a disadvantage.

What do you think about ideals students? This is really real? What they most look for in a student? @thelittleswimmer

@yssarm: I’m not sure what you mean by “ideals students”–are you talking about the ideal student for the school? No, the schools aren’t going to automatically reject you if you apply for FA, but it will put you at a disadvantage when compared against full pay applicants. I would say that the FA situation isn’t what the admission officers “would look most for” in applicants–if the school really wants you and thinks you’ll be a great fit, they’ll accept you.

Are you an international applicant?

Oh, I get it and yes, I am.
This makes it harder.
But vacancies are separated by continent? There is a limit for each country or continent? @thelittleswimmer

Every school wants diversity and, no, I do not think they put a limit on how many come from what country. The only exception to this might be some Asian countries. I know of a local private school (not TSAO) that had a backlash from having so many South Koreans and Chinese, (large %), that they put a limit on it.
Also, hard to get FA as a foreigner.

If your family income is 75 k or lower, you get full tuition (including boarding, computer, books, and linen service costs), but you can get partial aid if your income is higher.

Keep in mind that many prep schools do not offer FA to international students.

I talked to a few teachers at Exeter about this, and from what I’m aware, the financial aid system is almost independent (though not quite) from what the admissions office (though as a school, we aren’t officially “Need Blind,” as Phillips Andover is). I’d say your chances aren’t diminished by much, if at all.

Your chances won’t be hurt by much mainly because Phillips Exeter is such a large school and has the capacity to fund those who need financial aid-- I believe at least 40% of our current student body is indeed on FA. If I were you, I wouldn’t burden myself with worries like the ones you have now, where you fear that you might be put at a disadvantage-- you’d be much better off by putting them behind you and just focusing on your application and trying your best to get in.

It’s possible to get in with full FA when your family makes over 75k income too.

For future reference, please do not hijack a thread; it is rude to the original poster. Start a new discussion if needed.

It was a statement from personal experience.
I was adding on to what @dckx15 said about getting partial aid when your income is higher than 75k. I was adding it’s also possible to get full aid if your family income is higher than 75k. If you need proof use the family profiler (http://www.exeter.edu/admissions/1286.aspx) and put family income as inbetween 75k and 100k and look at what the min, max, and average aid that families are receiving now. The max is full tuition. I was saying that it’s possible to get full aid when your family income is over 75k and it was an addition to a statement previously made, not “hijacking” a thread.

Sorry, I misread “It’s” for “Is it.”

Full aid at PEA includes the tuition (and board if you live out of the day student vicinity), and typically a book stipend and sometimes even travel costs. Basically, if you get in, they want you to be able to attend and not be too strained financially. So even if covering plane tickets is a little difficult at times, or you don’t have as much spending money as your friends, you’ll still be able to go and have a great experience!!! (this is mainly for ppl with incomes less than 100k)
