Financial Aid Predictions

“Estimated Expected Family Contribution (EFC)= 063031”

Will I realistically receive financial aid packages from any schools with this EFC? Some schools that I am interested in include UNH, Bentley University and Northeastern University. Thanks!

Probably not. EFC is too high and those schools don’t meet need anyway.

How much will your parents pay each year?

About $10,000 per year for each parent.

You have a high EFC amd these schools don’t meet need… it’s possible that NE meets need (?) … not sure. Even so… If NE meets need then you would only get about $5000 in FA…and that could be in the form of a loan ( $68,000 COA - $63,000 EFC ). If any of these schools require the profile… Your EFC may not be accurate.

Hopefully you applied to some schools that will give you merit… or to schools that come in with a price tag of about $28,000 per year ( $20,000 from parents, $5500 student loan, $2500 from a job).

OP, you need to find an affordable safety ASAP. Did you apply to any in-state publics?

Bentley and Northeastern have some merit $. Bentley includes some merit in the NPC - did you run that one too?

I have two affordable options - just wondering if there was anyway I could go to a private school on a budget.

You probably can go to a private school on your budget… it just might not be the school you want. Glad you have 2 affordable options.

You are not going to get need aid and are pretty unlikely to get merit at NEU (well, the kind of any significance). Which are your safeties that you can afford?

NEU meets need for all. Plus their coop program is a good thing too. BUT merit aid only goes to their tippy top accepted students.

$20,000 means you need over $40,000 in some kind of aid.

With an EFC of $63,000, your family total income is in the over $200,000 a year range.

Do you have any affordable schools on your application list?

I was accepted to two state schools that I will be able to easily afford. My parents are certainly CAPABLE of paying more than 10K each per year but I’m just trying to gauge if I would be able to lessen the burden for their sake.

Which state schools cost your family 20K a yr all in?

After merit in my case, UNH does.

Although we applied for most schools in October for regular decision, we’ve been accepted into 3 schools thus far ( many of the other programs are dependent on audition)

so far we’ve received 2 financial aid estimates as of today. I thought it was a bit odd. We are applying to audition BFA programs and was hoping there was a little scholarship $$ from those if accepted. The scholarship $$ from one school was $24K but the price tag is at $68k, one school sent a letter today stating “early estimate” where they only gave us $1500. We do have an audition scheduled for both of these. I’m wondering if they sent the financial aid statements early on to either accept or decline now to free up funds for another prospective student or is this a typical thing?

@actingdreams

Your kid does NOT have to accept EA financial aid offers now. Just call the school…and say you aren’t prepared to make that commitment until you know he or she has been accepted into the auditioned program.

As an FYI…some BFA programs give regular merit aid and stack that with performance awards based on the audition. BUT lots of these programs are very costly, and don’t have the funding to provide a huge amount of aid to students. If your kid is applying to BFA programs in the $60,000 a year range…you will likely be expected to pay AT LEAST half of that cost. These schools just don’t have merit money to fully fund all students.

hi @thumper1 thank you for responding. I will give them both a call next week when they are back in the office. All of these schools were safeties.

@actingdreams Does your kid have any real safeties? To be a real safiy, it needs both a very high chance of acceptance and affordability.

hi @Eeyore123 accepted into 2 Universities in Chicago and the tuition is less than 14k for one school 3 hours away and one in the city  financial wise. He is hoping for a strong BFA program and I know they are costly. We don’t mind paying for 1/2 (that’s in reason) but 50K our of pocket is excessive
