My husband is now unemployed for 3 months. Should I call the Financial Aid office and ask them if they will use this circumstance in determining my child's FA or do you think it is too premature to do so at this time. I know the FAFSA is figured on last years income but now we have no income. Her first choice is a private school which is known for giving a lot of aid. I don't want the FA office to see us as greedy but I do not want to wait till they have no aid left. Any suggestions ??

You should contact them now. I think your suspicion about what aid is left is correct.

You should contact them and let them know.

There is a certain amount of time (3mon? 6mon?) that some schools say being unemployed is long enough for schools to consider more aid.

However, keep in mind that most schools don’t have the money to give more help.

What schools did your child apply to?

On both FAFSA and CSS there was a box to check if a parent was a dislocated worker. This should alert the finaid office at the college, but it never hurts to notify them. I do not believe there are specific funds allocated to dislocated workers but it is one of those discretionary facts that finaid officials take into consideration.
