I've searched this forum to find an answer to this particular question and didn't see one, so I apologize if I missed one somewhere.

My husband lost his job in July 2009. He's still unemployed. We contacted our oldest child's college financial aid office almost immediately last summer before the Fall semester tuition was due and they re-worked her entire package. They were fantastic about it and it was a painless process (thankfully).

Now our second child is applying to college and we have to complete the FAFSA for both children. I know we won't have to declare any assets because of our income and the fact that my husband is a "dislocated worker."

My question is: since my husband worked for seven months last year, even though our income is just below the simplified EFC formula limit, it will appear to these new colleges that he's still employed and earning some income. Do we notify these FinAid offices after filing the FAFSA that our financial situation changed halfway through last year and we're getting by just on unemployment now (I'm not employed)? Should we get back in touch with our first child's FinAid office and tell them our situation hasn't changed since last summer? Should we just wait and see what our EFC comes to before we do anything? Never having been in this situation before, I don't know what to do. I just want to sure that our kids are eligible for whatever will help them get through college next year.
