Financial Aid Qualification

Hello College Confidential, This is my first post here so I am hopeful that I am doing this the right way. I have a question regarding how colleges, generally with large endowments, view the college applicant who comes form a home where the parents are divorced. WHen filling out the financial information, especailly for FASFA, whose information is listed? If the parents have joint custody, is it ok to utilize only one parents financials? Thanks in advance for your input!

For FAFSA you only report the financial information of the custodial parent (and spouse if applicable), or in the case of joint custody the parent(and spouse) you spend the most time with.

However most schools with large endowments also require CSS/profile or their own financial forms. These ask for a lot more financial information and will ask for the financial information of both the custodial and non custodial parents (and spouses). These schools will use FAFSA to determine eligibility for federal aid but will use the more detailed information provided by CSS, including non custodial parent finances, to determine eligibility for institutional aid.

I would say nearly all of the high endowment schools use Profile too. With Profile both parent’s plus any new spouse’s incomes will be looked at as will assets for all.

Thanks for your insight ladies, I really appreciate it. Have a 2010 kiddo who is being looked at for both academics and baseball. Schools have asked for some financial information and hav ebeen wondering how to answer their questions. Thanks for your help! J23
