financial aid question

Does anyone know if only one parents works, by choice, if a student could still qualify for some financial aid? We are thinking of applying to local day schools. I noticed Milton specifically mentions that both parents are expected to be working or have a valid reason for not. We own a small home, have old cars and live frugally. It is definitely a conscious choice. We could not afford it without aid but I can see a schools point about expecting both to contribute. If anyone has any experience this? Thx.

It is my understanding that they include a calculated income for a non-working parent when they figure financial aid. Not sure what that is though.

I have seen FA given when one parent works only part time on purpose.

I saw a number somewhere, and it may even have been minimum wage. Not sure where, or which school(s) that applied to.

Working part time is not necessarily held against a family for FA reasons, but I think they add something (or subtract) for a second parent who is not employed outside the home without a reason (i.e. preschool age child or younger or being caregiver of a family member with health issue).
