Financial Aid Questions - Additional Documentation Needed ("Estimated Tax Information on FAFSA")

Hi all!

I have recently received a notification stating that additional documentation is needed for the "Estimated Tax Information on FAFSA." On MyUCLA, it states, "The office of UCLA Financial Aid and Scholarships is unable to determine your award based on the ESTIMATED tax information you or your parents reported on your application. Please go to www.fafsa.gov or www.caldreamact.org to update your/your parents information from estimated figures you initially reported on your application, to the actual figures you submitted to the IRS on your 2013 tax return."

However, my parents' 2013 tax returns have not been filed, though they have filed for a six month extension. Because of this, my parents will be unable to report their actual figures until that time. The estimated figures previously given were used in filing for the extension, and the final 2013 returns is expected to mirror the estimated figures.

How will this extension affect my financial aid? Should I update the tax filing status from "Will File" to "Already Completed," though my parents have not yet filed their tax return, so that UCLA Financial Aid Office may determine my financial award? Will I still be able to receive UCLA scholarships and other financial aid this incoming award year until my parents update their tax information? Is there a specific deadline in which I will need to update my FAFSA in order to receive aid?

Call them and tell them the situation. Saying “Already Complete” would be lying and could be worse, because chickens always come home to roost…
