UC FAFSA Verification

Unfortunately, I was selected to submit verification documents for my FAFSA to the UC's I applied to. I sent them in, but I don't understand the purpose. Are the schools themselves going to correct my FAFSA information and then post an updated version of my provisional awards on their website? I called UCD and UCLA, and both said that I just need to keep waiting. However, when I called UCSD, they said that they would use those verification documents after I submit my SIR and that I need to correct my FAFSA to see an updated version (I used 2009 tax return as an estimate because my parents did not file prior to March 2).

I need these financial aid packages in order to make a decision, but I'm worried they won't be up on the site before May 1. Has anyone else experienced the same thing?

I hope your parents have completed their 2010 tax returns…and you too (if you were required to file). If so, go into the FAFSA website and UPDATE your FAFSA to reflect the 2010 tax return information fields AND change your filing status to “taxes filed”. Until you do this, it sounds like UCSD will not process your financial aid application. Most schools will NOT finalize a financial aid award using estimated tax return info from the previous year.

Amend your FAFSA ASAP to reflect your completed 2010 tax returns.

For verification, the schools likely want the 2010 tax returns NOT the 2009 ones. See what it says on the verification info you got from the school…but I’d guess they want the completed and signed 2010 returns.

Sorry, I forgot to mention that I just updated the FAFSA yesterday to reflect both my parents’ and my 2010 return. Hopefully it’s not too late… I would have corrected it sooner but I thought that the schools would correct if for me.

You need to send whatever the college(s) request for verification and do so ASAP. Contact UCSD and TELL them that you updated your FAFSA on April 18…then ask when they might get your aid package to you.

Re: verification and what you’ve sent…and your FAFSA. The schools will check to see that what you entered on your FAFSA is correct…and yes…if there is a mistake, they are required to make the corrections.

I sent the documents to all the schools at the end of March. If I don’t see anything by the end of the week, I will go ahead and call them again. Thanks for the advice.

If you submitted your initial FAFSA on time, you should have your place held in line for the funding that goes with your initial SAR. Submitting the actual taxes at tax time in April has never been a problem for people I have known at various UCs. Some friends are verified every year, some not at all, but it is really no big deal. They are not suspicious of you, they are just following the rules to verify a certain percentage of applicants.

That’s what I’ve heard–that they are not suspicious. But this verification process has put a hitch in my schedule. I can’t even see my provisional award letter for UCLA, and that’s the school I’m considering the most…
