I received about 45k in duke grants, 5k in federal pell grants, 2k in work study, and 5k in external awards.
Since then, Duke has taken away about 5k in Duke grants their 2k in the work study I think because I didn't report my 5k in external until a couple of days ago.
Does Duke make sure you pay your expected family contribution?
So does this mean even if i win 40k in scholarships then Duke will not pay for their scholarships then?
My parents are seperated and the custodial parent makes around 16000 a year and the non about the same. Does anyone know why my finaid is so low? I've seen people with full rides on this kind of earnings. Also my parents own real estate, does this ruin that part of the financial aid? Thanks.

If you only make 32k, you should be getting a full ride. I guess the assets in real estate count for something.

About external scholarships- they mention that they will reduce your loan and work study amount first, then grant aid.

You have a total of 55k-57k in financial aid, none of which are loans. That doesn’t seem so little. The estimated student budget for this year is about 60k and that includes books and transportation costs, which financial aid doesn’t cover.

The Duke grant is not a scholarship; it is a grant to bring your total to some specified level. If you have external aid, they will decrease your grant by the same amount.

One last thing: if you are enrolled in the school’s insurance program (that is, you don’t have health insurance from some other source), then check your aid on ACES. I don’t know if they do this automatically now or not, but you can get them to add the 1.6k insurance cost to your fall term’s aid. See if your fall aid is about 1.6k more than your spring. If not, call the financial aid office and ask them to increase the grant.

Ah I forgot about the pell grants. Your total aid essentially gives you a full ride… so yeah it’s very low at all.

Yes, if you receive $40,000 in outside scholarships that will reduce the Duke Grant of $45,000 down to $5,000. I have no suggestions as to why $2,000 in work study was rescinded. You should call the financial aid office. There should be a contact name and number on the email you received.

Remember 40% of students at Duke receive financial aid.

Work study counts as part of the “self-help” component of FA packages, thus they are one of the first things to get reduced when factoring in external aid. I believe the order goes something like 1) unsubsidized loans 2) subsidized loans 3) work study 4) grants

To the OP: yes, assets held by parents are considered in calculating FA awards:
