Important Financial Aid Question for 2015'er

Here is the financial aid package I received from Duke:
49,000 Grants
1500 per semester work study
1000 per semester loan

Total tuition is 55,000

I then received 5000 in pell grants through FAFSA. Am I allowed to use this pell grant to cover the work study and loans so that I don't have to do either? If so, and I therefore have full tuition paid for by grants, what happens if I receive outside scholarships? Where does this money go? (I know the outside scholarship part may differ by school, so if you're familiar with Duke's policies please let me know).

GO BLUE DEVILS.

Outside scholarships take away loans/work study first and if there’s none left, they take away grants. In other words, there’s no benefit for having outside scholarships in excess of your loans and work study amounts. I had two outside scholarships coming in freshman year and they applied half of them first semester my freshman year and the other half second semester my freshman year even though the scholarships were both single lump sum monetary awards. Perhaps if the scholarship amount exceeds the loans for the year, you might be able to spread it out more than just the two semesters they did it for me, but I’m not sure about that.

Having said all that, double check with the financial aid office and ask them. Policies can change.
