Financial aid/scholarships confusion HELP!!

ok im really confused about all the financial aid/scholarships business. i got admitted but i didnt get a notification in the letter about any scholarship but i did get another letter saying that i got a financial aid scu grant. i called them up and they said this is based on merit.. but i thot the scu grant was al about financial aid..
I'm just sort of confused because i don't understand if i got a financial aid or a scholarship based on merit. Please help me out! also, is the only time to get a scholarship with your admission letter or do they mail them out later in the year too?

pleasee reply! any help is appreciated!!

If I am not wrong - SCU grant is not financial aid. It is like merit aid.

If you log on to SCU webpage using your i.d you will see it under aid category, click accept and then go to 2011 to see the detail. The detail is all there. good luck.

yea i know iv looked there. so scu grant is like merit aid? so will i still qualify for financial aid…?
and what is the typical(average) amount of money one receives from scu grants? i just want to know where i stand in terms of how much i got.
thanks!

I am a new parent so i am sorry I dont have much info. You can write to their Fin aid office and ask or call. There are many threads on this forum talking about fin aid…

I have read people getting (in other colleges too) anywhere from a few thousand to full tuition. SCU offers many types of scholarships, so it depends on your stats. Fin aid should be need blind if you qualify.

My daughter also has an SCU grant. She is a senior at SCU. She has gotten this grant for all four years. She was told it was a combination of merit/need. We talked to finaid before she made thedecision to matriculate there and was told this would be renewed for all four years if she maintained a 3.0 GPA. It has been.

Re: additional aid…remember that your SCU grant reduces your “need” by that amount. My daughter has work study and a Stafford loan. Her EFC was about $22,000 but when you take her $6000 grant out of that, the balance of her need is !6,000. Then subtract the $5000 or so subsidized stafford and it’s down to $11,000 of need. She was also offered an unsubsidized stafford which we declined.

I agree with Pixel, contact finaid at SCU to find out what is what. They are VERY helpfu.

Oh…and FYI…she didn’t receive Work Study initially. That was added when she asked if her aid could somehow be increased. She did this at the accepted student days in April.

thumper1, I’m confused. Do you mean $22000 is your need(COA-EFC) instead of EFC?
You said SCU grant reduces “need” by that amount, but you’re subtracting the 6K grant from your EFC.

lifeistough, you can reference to previous years’ SCU Common Data Set - Section H for average award size. But with most colleges endowment shrinkage due to economy, I’m not sure if SCU’s financial awards is impacted.

SCU is weird in the way it awards aid. It notifies you in your acceptance letter if you have recieved the presidential, provost, or dean’s scholarship (i only know this because i got the provost). Then it sends out a separate finaid package that has any other SCU aid plus your estimated federal aid on it. They essentially say the SCU grant is based on need and merit. Basically, the more they want you to go to SCU the more they will give you, but if you can afford it they might give you less even though they desire you highly. Also, the secondary finaid award should’ve included your estimated federal aid, but none of those grants/loans/work study are set in stone until you get all hte FAFSA work done. Hope that helped…
