There is a thread in the Reed College forum with a link to the NY Times article.

I was wondering if this was just the tip of the iceberg. Any other thoughts and comments?

already a thread on this http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/parents-forum/727737-nytimes-article-about-reed-college.html

Reed has always had issues with financial aid.

This has always been the case with colleges that are need aware. It does not surprise me a bit that these issues are becoming more widespread.

Most colleges in the US are need blind for admissions. They just gap you if you need more money than they can provide. There are some colleges, most all of them private, most of them providing a good percentage of need, that are need aware. They do not want to put kids in the position of being accepted but not being able to come for financial reasons. So they focus on giving as much aid as they can for those kids they do accept.

Cpt, I haven’t seen specific info on colleges being need blind (except for those that specifically advertise it). I have trouble believing MOST colleges are need blind. Can you provide a reference?

all state colleges are need blind and many privates especially lower level
ones. Doesn’t mean they’ll meet your need if you get accepted but simply
they’ll accept or deny based on your app. I’d guess that’s something
like 70 or 80 percent of American colleges.

Erin’s Dad, most colleges are need blind. It is just a fact of life. Here on CC, the bulk of attention is on schools compete for students with colleges that are need aware. Nearly all state schools are needblind as are the colleges that are not very selective. They just don’t meet the need. There are only a small group of colleges that are need aware.

And an even smaller number that meet 100% of institutionally determined need.

Here’s a reference from a recent NACAC report: 93% of publics and 81% of privates claim to be need blind.

[News: Need Blind, but ‘Gapping’ - Inside Higher Ed](http://www.insidehighered.com/news/2008/11/26/aid)

Ironically, most of the need-aware colleges are selective schools that meet full need, as cptofthehouse explained.

Thats not good…
