financial aid & the irs

Im going back to school and didnt file last year because I worked for a family member and the few part time jobs I had were only for a few months. Fasa has requested tax summary for last year. Could I get penalized by the irs by requesting this?

If worked for a family member means got paid in cash, then I would not worry about that. Everyone at one point or another has done some form of honest work where they were paid in cash. Like, mowing lawns comes to mind with that. Babysitting comes to mind with that as well.

With your few part time jobs you only worked for a little while...you have to see if you were legally supposed to file your taxes or not. You have to see what your collective income was from the few part time jobs that you only worked for a little while. I do not know the income levels by heart and you have to look that up on the IRS web site to double check. The only thing I know for sure is that there are some really low levels of income where you can actually not file for taxes, but they are really low!

Please go to the IRS web site and research this. With taxes and the FAFSA is it best to be 100% honest.

You can go here...

<a href="http://www.irs.gov/individuals/article/0,,id=96623,00.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.irs.gov/individuals/article/0,,id=96623,00.html</a></p>

think long and hard about whatever the more intricate details of your situation are...then think of maybe going to an accountant or calling the nearest IRS Building to you.

if you did earn enough money to require you to file, you can file back taxes. If you didn't owe taxes (which you probably didn't if you only worked a little) they don't have penalties or interest. it shouldn't be that hard to file. If you don't have the w-2 forms, you can call the IRS and they will send you what they have on file for you. They are actually very helpful -- I know all the above based on experience (and it all worked out well).
