Financial Aid Verification Process

I received an e-mail from the school I am going to be transferring to for the fall (2011-2012 academic year) saying they needed a copy of my taxes, as well as my parents. I've been selected for verification before, but I was under the impression they only needed your most recently filed taxes, which in this case would be for 2010. However, the new school is asking for 2009, and there is a significant income difference between the two years (so much so that for the 2010-2011 academic year I received very little aid, whereas this year my EFC is much better). I thought aid was disbursed/awarded on a year to year basis, and since this will be my first year there, I'm just curious as to why they'd need information for a time I wasn't attending their institution.

Anyone had something similar requested? Does it affect the aid package in any way, or is it just something some schools want for the purpose of their records?
