financial aid while older sibling is in medical school

Thanks in advance for any info. If parents are paying for an older child’s medical school costs, will this factor in to financial aid for a younger sibling who is attending college? This will probably be my situation in a couple of years. I am a HS senior who is starting college next year.

No it won’t factor in. It will be expected that the costs of medical school are the responsibility of the medical student. Usually they pay for that with student loans.

There are a few schools that will count graduate school as having two children in college…but there are certain rules. I don’t know how this applies to medical school.

The college would have to be one that meets full need. What school will you be attending in the fall? Have you asked them this question? That would be your best bet.

Not likely that medical school older sibling will be counted on the younger siblings financial aid forms. Medical school students are independent for financial aid purposes even IF the schools ask for parent information as many do. Medical School students are eligible for $45,000 in unsubsidized loans and can take Grad plus loans up to the cost of attendance. These things would make the Med school student not a factor for younger siblings.

But you can ask. But probably not.

Does the college you will be attending meet full need for all? If not, your aid might not change anyway.
