Financial Aid

Gross adjusted income <15,000
minor assets (<200k, including business, excluding primary residence)

would the majority of financial aid be loan or grant-based at UPenn (Wharton if that matters) as a transfer student.

if loans, how much would be subsidized and not require a co-signer? i would assume that the majority should be grant if the annual income is so low, but I’ve learned that assumptions about what is logical, and how to regard money with financial aid are rarely the same thing.

anyone have experience in the matter?

My family's adjusted gross income was 8500~ and I got full tuition/housing in grants. I'm actually not going to take out any loans... plane tickets and books aren't that expensive. I'd say you might get some similar.

It depends. My family's income is 0 but assets can hurt. If your parents aren't willing to cover their end of the contribution you have to take it out as an unsubsidized loan. Otherwise the loans should be small and reasonable with the rest in grants.

we aren't "poor" per se, but with a new business and over 80k in losses, it really makes it a hassle (second mortgage on the house, etc.). let's just say we don't eat out or go to the movies... ever. if a loan is the only option, and is not an exorbitant amount, it would be possible.

does it matter that i am a transfer student?

and thanks for the replies, it does ease my mind some, and is very much appreciated.

Note: noncustodial parents form (2 people, 1 household) adjusted gross is ~25k. i'm not sure how this pans out, but if it must be included i may apply for a noncustodial parent waiver because we have very limited/no contact in almost a year.

Oh, my family also had almost no assets, besides a Honda and a Hyundai. ;o

glad it was mostly in grants... still worried. chicago or wharton acceptance depends on financial aid to a large extent, even though i've decided that I would prefer UPenn

Im an international student from Europe. My family income was around 25,000 virtually no assets and I got a fat 40k grant with 1500 family contribution and yesterday I randomly got an email that they want to pay me a round trip plane ticket, I was like ***, sweet

I hate assets >.<!!!!! More specifically I hate parents that have assets that don't value education.

congratulations upenn_rocks... that's a pretty sweet deal.

45k x 4 years is a big number to value education in your parents fairness. i know that if i don't get aid of some sort, even when my mom & stepdad together were making 200k/year i couldn't go. stepdad is an IT consultant, so he gets no retirement benefits/insurance... just that takes a big chunk out of what seems like a good amount of money. (Note: we don't particularly get along, so he wouldn't have helped anyway)

don't have that problem any more... now we really don't have any money.
