financial aid....

hmm my parents and i are debating
theres no way i am going to do work study so thats about 2600 i have to find in scholarships or i have to make that much in the summer or i have to use that much from my bank account
i got around 32k scholarships from nu another 3-4k in loans but my parents have to pay 6400
thats about 4000 more than my efc calculated should i contest or not
i really was expecting something at least close to my efc

Why wouldn't you do work study? It's a fairly easy way to make money. You only have to work 8+ hours a week. Just do it and it'll make your life a lot easier.

what's work study?

Work study lets students have a job and earn money to get personal needs while at college. It basically takes a weight off of parents/your own shoulders in where you're going to get food money, etc. while you're trying to pay for college.

i barely work 8-10 hours a week this year and my grades have suffered so much
thank god im already a senior

That sounds like a fair package...Your whole schedule changes drastically when in college compared to being stuck in a HS from 8 to 3 so I wouldn't take your HS experience as too much of an indication of what you'll do in college...you'll find the time...I've never heard anyone have a hard time with work study...you'll meet people and get to know the workings of whatever part of NU you work for...

how does work study work exactly?? You work about 8hrs a week, do you get a paycheck or does all that money go directly to paying off your tuition? I'm kind of confused....

Umm... I'm gonna let someone else answer that. I know what it is and what it does, but I'm not 100% sure how it works.

You work 8-12 hours a week and get a paycheck made out to you every other week....the way the billing works the money is best used for personal expenses...The expected work study earnings are very close to the personal expense estimate...

Guys....here is a link to the NU pages that list the current openings....work study is a great little program...you work for an employer who values your time as a student and would probably be much more helpful than off campus jobs not involved in then program...it is a federally subsidized program and not all students can particpate...if you are invited to participate you are lucky...you can earn your personal expenses without much trouble at all... Deferred, you should tell your parents how lucky you are!!!

You certainly should discuss the difference with the financial aid office at NW. Was there a mistake? Why is there this differential? It certainly does not hurt to ask. Does NW use PROFILE as well as FAFSA? That can result in a higher EFC that the college comes up with. You should also be working many hours in the summer, to help with the costs and bridge the gap.

I wouldn't reject your work-study if it was offered to you. It is really easy to find a work-study job, and many of the jobs are so brainless that you basically get paid to do your homework. Plus, depending on the type of job you have/want, there are many different hours you can work. For example, if you are a security monitor in a dorm, your hours will be between 8pm and 12am. There are also many work-study jobs in offices around campus that will give your more "traditional" hours. Most of the people I know who don't have work-study are jealous of those who do because it is more difficult to get a decent job if you aren't work-study.

Actually, Glamourbaby19, I'm already jealous of him. He's been accepted at NU, and they're giving him a lot of help in his finaid package. Those are two things that I'm praying that I'll be given within the next few months but am not so sure I'll be so lucky to get.

Which methodology did you use to calculate your EFC? You should have had a choice between the Federal and the Institutional method. The Federal method comes out higher, but it's not the one private schools use.

It sounds to me like a fabulous financial aid package. They are essentially covering your full tuition and half your room and board. That sounds extremely generous to me, but if you absolutely can't make it work, you should definitely get in touch with the NU financial aid office.

You might want to reconsider the work study idea. I think you might find work study less strenuous than your job is now. In college, you have the opportunity to manage your time and your job scheduling very differently than you do in HS where you are stuck in school all day every day.

I hear there are studies showing that students who do some work study, actually get better grades. I haven't been able to track down and verify that study, so if anybody has seen it, I'd love to hear about it.

wait so they actualyl cut u a check???
i thought they just applied it to ur tuition bills

well yes...It's not much...8-12 hours a week at $6 to $8 an hour minus taxes....you use it for personal expenses.

does anyone know about national merit semifinalist scholarships?
