D2 is a senior considering applying ED and I am not sure if we should apply for financial aid. D1 is a current college junior and so for one year, we will have two kids in college which I believe will make us eligible for financial aid, whereas previously we have not been given financial aid but D1 does have a small amount of merit. I am worried about hurting D2’s chances of getting admitted to need-aware school even though we will prob only qualify for $10-$20K of aid per school’s NPC. Should I consider only applying for aid for D1 and not for D2? Our income is higher in 2021 than 2020 and I doubt that once D1 is out of school we will be eligible for aid for D2’s remaining years.
We have a financial aid section on CC. Would you like your query moved there?
If you need financial aid, apply for financial aid. Need aware schools consider your level of financial need. Are you able and willing to pay $10k-$20k more for that one year? If you get that in aid, that amount could be used for subsequent years.
If your kid applies regular decision, the financial aid landscape for the kid doesn’t change.
Remember also, you won’t have any college expenses for kid one once she graduates.
And lastly, if you really want the ability to compare financial aid offers and net costs amongst multiple schools…don’t apply ED because that goes away with an ED acceptance.
It would be helpful if you named the school, and where your D’s stats fall relative to that school’s mid-50% range. Is this a FAFSA only school, or does it also require Profile?
Yes, prob a good idea to move the query - thanks! I need to figure out if I am willing to pay more for one year…thank you!
It’s Miami, and based on my daughter’s stats and her school’s Naviance, it is a small reach. They require the CSS. Thanks.
Miami Florida great school but im not sure what bump she would have ED.
And the financial picture would be the same ED or RD
I moved this to financial aid and scholarships
Miami also has early action which isn’t binding, I believe. Why not do that so you can compare net costs amongst multiple acceptances?
