Daughter : SAT 2340 , 3.9 GPA , 2270 PSAT..volunteer work in key club..

My D is going to college next year . Unfortunate thing is my husband just lost his $90 000 engineering job since april. He is collecting unempolyment $2000 .

Question : Will FaFSA consider currently financial situation rather than his 2009 tax return.

You will have to report his 2009 income (including unemployment income and severance money, if there was any) on FAFSA. Then you can ask the school for a special circumstances adjustment to reflect the loss of job. What, if any, adjustment they make is up to the financial aid office of each school.

Just had a client in my office yesterday in a similar situation. I was very surprised how far the school went with him. The adjusted award was close to what I would have expected of a $0 EFC.

scottaa, that is not the normal case. I know of several families who had similar circumstances and the schools were not willing to adjust the FA for the upcoming Fall Semester. The assumption is that this years school is paid for with last years income.
Particularly if the recently unemployed person received severance.

With those stats you should consider one of the schools with excellent merit aid for NMF. Keilexandra has a thread about it.
