Hi,

I'm a returning student to NYU, but applied for financial aid for the first time this year, due to a change in circumstance. I'm a little confused about the process, however. My FAFSA was processed two weeks ago...but when do I find out about what my NYU aid would be? Not until May/June or in a few weeks?
Also, my EFC is 180- how will I fare?

Thank you!

FA letters come out in late June. You should get the max Pell grant and Stafford/Perkins loans and any other grants you are eligible for as a very low EFC student. And you’ll get work study. Of course all this won’t come close to the COA of NYU. Did you have a scholarship for your current year???

Are you saying that you are a current NYU student and that this is the first time you are applying for financial aid? Did you fill out your FAFSA each year you were in attendance?

I would certainly speak to the Financial Aid office directly and clearly explain to them your current circumstance. The way it was explained to me, if you never applied for financial aid before, you are not in the system to get a “piece of the pie” and they may not give you the aid you are hoping for. I am not saying this will happen, but NYU determines your aid freshman year, and it is expected that if a student’s circumstances/income does not change dramatically, that they will get the same level of aid all four years. They “budget” for that amount of aid.

If you were never in their “budget” for aid as a freshman, then they do not automatically give you aid. It is more like an appeal and is at their discretion.

This was explained to me by financial aid when my D was accepted class of 2012. We did and still do not qualify for financial aid. However, I wanted to know what would happen if my husband lost his current income. I was told that unlike other schools that figure out financial aid for all students each year, that NYU makes that determination based on the FAFSA filed Freshman year. They advised us to file a FAFSA each year so at least that was in place if there was a change of income…but basically said that finaid at a later date would be at the schools discretion and would not be guaranteed.

Not saying you should panic…but I think you need to be speaking directly to financial aid at NYU to get all your answers and to get an appeal in motion if that is what is needed to do.

Good luck!
