Hey guess I had a question for any financial advisers out there or anyone that can answer.

I have been pretty attracted to the thought of becoming a financial adviser and was wondering if anyone has had any experience and if so what is the route you would take upon graduating college (job, company, etc.)?

Thanks.

Hi,

I don’t know much about this field, but I do know that typically people who are interested in this industry opt for the CFP (Certified Financial Planner) and or CFA designation. I would also imagine that you would need to work for a few years in portfolio management for a bank or another firm, build some contacts/clients and then open up your own boutique. Again, don’t quote me on ANY of this as I’m still a sophomore in college and only now beginning to learn about business professions (although I’m fairly certain about the CFP thing), but yeah, try googling some of the things I’ve mentioned. I’d imagine google is a better source for this stuff since everyone here is into investment banking, and nowadays, accounting.

Here’s a link about investment management btw:

Ive worked at a financial planning firm for the past year and a half. You need a bachelor’s degree in order to attain the CFP certification. In order to sit for the CFP exam you must take 6 CFP courses. To get the certification you must successfully complete the courses, pass the CFP exam and have 3 years of relevant work experience. (source:[Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards Inc.](http://www.cfp.net/)). Btw in case you didnt know, financial planning, in addition to wealth management, has a huge sales component. (i.e selling of securities, annuities, life insurance…etc)
