Personal Financial Advisor

I'm extremely interested in this career. I would like to look into this job possibility because I find the task of helping people manage their money in a portfolio to be a very exciting and rewarding career. In addition, I'm also very keen on the stock market and other mediums of investments. I love to network with people and help them realize their financial potential.

What should I know about preparation for this career? Currently I am majoring in Finance at the Kelley School of Business (Indiana) and I've decided that careers like Investment Banking aren't really for me. During my freshman year of high school I met with a financial advisor and a senior analyst at a local Merrill Lynch firm and they made it very clear that one must have at least 2 years of work experience after completion of a college degree to land a job as an advisor. What sector of finance should I gain my work experience in to maximize my chances with a decent financial management firm?

My dad is a financial advisor for AXA Advisors and he was in the food service business before getting to financial planning for individuals. There is a lot of certification you must get before you can even begin to work with clients. I think personal drive and the ability to stick with it for the first few years is much more essential than the right kind of work experience.

Financial Advising is especially hard for younger people because it takes a lot of business maturity. You aren't going to start making a lot of money for at least 5 years, because it takes that long to build your client base and get all the certification to be able to sell the high commission products.
