Hello,

I was wondering if anyone had any information on the best banking services in New Orleans and around the Tulane/Uptown area. Sadly, there are absolutely no Bank of America branches in New Orleans. Which banks have the best customer services, online access, and ATM locations for Tulane students?

When I was visiting, I noticed a lot of Capital One branches, but Capital One is horrible in my personal experience and from what I have read online.

Whitney Bank seems to have a presence in New Orleans, but it seems like it is just a regional bank. Are there any banks in New Orleans that are national in scope?

Many thanks for any information you can provide!

Had same issue. I find it odd that the nearest Bank of America is in Baton Rouge. Go figure. But there is a Chase machine in the lobby of the student center, along with Capital One and Whitney. So Chase is OK.

Capital One bought out Hibernia, a local bank. That’s why there are so many of them around New Orleans. Nola recently got Am South but there are too few. Chase and Capital One are the two big players in town. I use Chase, and my fiance uses Capital One. We both live in Uptown New Orleans.

There is an easy to access Whitney Bank in the LBC. I have an account here for when I’m in New Orleans and a US Bank account for when I go back home. Having two banks isn’t actually that difficult.

When S attended Tulane, he came in with a Bank of America account. I called BofA and they “waived” the ATM fees for out-of-network withdrawals. This was a temporary fix which you needed to call back about each year. I don’t know if there was anything special about why he was able to get that waiver, but I’m pretty sure we’re not special! So, S was able to keep using his account. He also ended up opening one at the Whitney which is where he had his check direct-deposited from a part time job.

TT - If Capital One scares you (figuratively speaking) then by all means go with Chase. My D was a Katrina freshman, and at that time there was no Capital One and no Chase … in fact no national banks at all. She was able to make do by taking max cash twice a semester and paying the $3 non-account-holder fee … $12 total per year.

I guess I should put in a good word for Capital One. That bank used to be the worst. But it’s been treating us right for the past three years … unlike Citibank and Chase, who apparently view us a prey. Just one data point I know, but …
