All of the posts I read about Art school, state that they are very expensive as they are usually private. So how do most students pay for art school? Are they wealthy families or are there loan programs available? My son is interested in going to art school but I don't know how he will be able to afford it with my income.

Scholarships. Many schools have their own merit-based scholarships. Also, look into Scholastic and YoungArts.

Scholarships, loans and work. My S sells his artwork. It’s not easy. We chose it based on fit.

Be careful with the loans. My D’s college roommate had very little or no parental help. She did a year (maybe 2 at a CC, then transferred to MCAD. She now has a student loan payment of $850.00/month. She was a comic major and does not want to work for someone else, so she is working at a $10.00 hr job and doing art at night.

Financing college should begin the day a couple gets married. A lesson I’m learning 24 years too late but it’s true. Don’t wait to have a baby to start saving. Even that is too late for most middle class couples now.

We took finances into serious consideration when looking at art schools for DS. We’ve been saving since DS was in kindergarten but even that is not enough to pay for 4 years at some schools. He was offered scholarships at most of the schools he applied to. The ones that didn’t offer any $$ were ruled out right away. He’s now @ Tyler which ended up in our price range and he should be able to graduate with little, if any, debt. (BTW, he loves Tyler.)
