UC Berkeley rejected me but invited me to apply to UC Davis. I was just informed that I got in.

However, the financial aid estimator looks a bit…bleak since I’m OOS. 10,000 dollars a year when my EFC is 0? This wouldn’t sting as much but UF is pretty much paid for twice over.

I’d really like to go to UC Davis. Does this seem possible? Is there any additional aid I could expect to receive?

Sorry to say, you should not expect more aid unless you can get some outside scholarships on your own. The same would have been for UC Berkeley. The UCs are trying to get more out of state students because they need more revenue. By the way, in case you don’t know much about UC Davis, it is a top 40 school (from the US News rankings, anyway!).

Well, considering you signed up for work study, that shaves off a chunk (my estimate for SD is $2,800), so if you end up doing work study, it will take off a third of your costs. The rest you’ll probably have to take out loans, but your parents can maybe be able to contribute a few thousand?

My EFC was practically zero, and UCD left me with around $8,500 I’d still have to pay, but I don’t think it’s too much compared to others. I’ll probably take an unsubsidized loan of $2,000 and a federal direct subsidized loan of $3,500, which comes out to around $5,500 a year; I think it’s very manageable.

Oh, I thought the $10,000 was the aid they offered you. So they offered you
over $30,000 in aid?? Is some of that loans? I am shocked that they would
offer an education to an out of state person at below cost. It just doesn’t
fit with all the press releases!
