Finanial Aid Award now online!!

Let's see, my FALETR page was blank when I first checked. Then I received my hard copy of the acceptance and it said my FA had not been fully processed yet. So I think anyone who doesn't have a letter at all still has a chance at the merit money. However if you have a letter and the merit is not listed, you haven't gotten any.

I just got my package in the mail :)

My FA letter wasn't showing up on the website, but i'm glad i waited. The mailed packet had good things =)

Edit: Swimguy112, I'm in the Pacific NW and got the letter today. Yours should be here today or tomorrow.

How much is the total cost with everything included?

I know tuition is around 30k..and together with room, board, meal plan..etc, Can someone give me a rough estimate of the total cost?

i got the trustee distinguished scholarship which is like $63,000 total. i got $20,000 this first year i think.

Rice University | Prospective Students
For 2009-2010:
Tuition $31,430.00
Mandatory Fees $627.00
Room and Board $11,230.00
Cost for One Academic Year $43,287.00

Then there are misc expenses. Rice estimates $800 for books and $1500 for other expense, your mileage may vary.

April 2 and still no update on my FA Letter from December 15. I e-mailed Rice over a week ago…no response. Should I call them?

We’re in the same position: ED with prelim aid award only. I assume we’ll get something in the mail soon. I’m guessing it will be essentially the same need calculation. If so, I assume we will be expected to pay roughly the same amount as in Dec and the Rice grants will go up by $2k to reflect the increased tuition for the fall. Would be nice to know for sure though!

Yeah, exactly. I’m anticipating for my aid to go up ever so slightly; it should also include $1,000/year for National Merit.

2 things:

first, is the packet people received just the acceptance packet, or is there a separate financial aid packet?

and second, if i’m reading this correctly, a rice national merit scholarship replaces part of any grant they give you instead of adding to it :/

The financial aid statement was included in my acceptance packet.

And yep, NM replaces part of the Rice Grant or whatever.

i did NOT get a financial aid statement in my packet, even though the online financial aid thing said my application had been reviewed. hopefully it’s not in the mail right now as i am leaving town for the next week and a half

although, i will be going to the owl days, so perhaps i can work things out with the finaid office face to face

Definitely call. They can’t put you on hold for a week!

Meh. I called on Thursday; the man I spoke to in the FA Office said that hey were currently busy with RD kids and then transferred me to my counselor, who wasn’t there. I left a message. No response so far. No update on the online award letter, either. I guess I have little choice but to wait…

Sigh…are any other ED/RD applicants still waiting on Rice’s final FA offer?

Did anybody get the National Merit Scholarship?

I sent in my card, but no aid…

Soulside you’re not alone. Still waiting for the ED award update.

sviola: i think the NM awards are given in may(ish), when the rest of the corporate sponsored/NMSC sponsored awards are given

I didn’t get an update either for ED. Then again they told me I wasn’t getting jack so I only sent in all the paper work a couple days ago so I probably won’t hear for a long time if at all.

I sent all my stuff in before the March 1 deadline, so that probably doesn’t have a whole lot to do with it. I imagine they are simply busy with the amount of applications they received this year.

Or, they have forgotten about us ED acceptees…:)

If you think that’s late: returning students don’t hear about their financial aid packages until the middle of the summer! But there have been NO surprises for us in the five years we’ve had kids at Rice - Rice has been spot-on at about our FAFSA EFC estimate. ED students have already committed to attend, which is probably why the FA department is frantically working with the RD applicants - they have to make their decisions by Mayl 1. I imagine they’ll get to you soon - and then they’ll finally get to us! ;)
